Site Speed

I've been getting several reports of this site's slow speed, but after running server speed tests, I've concluded that there are no problems with that.

Rather, the forum skin is most likely causing the problem. It works well on DSL and Cable, but not on dial-up, so expect an additional dialup-friendly skin to be up shortly.

For the curious few, here are the speed results:

URL: http://pentaxforums.com
Speed: 1.58 sec (see details below)
Compare to: 3.14 sec (our current benchmark average).

Hi Adam

I'm on a T1 connection at work, a satellite connection at home. It's very slow on both. Please take a moment to compare the speeds of two sites taht I eddit, both of which use an older version of vBulletin on their forums:
http://www.tribalartforum.org
http://www.turkotek.com

Another site using vBulletin, also much faster, is at
http://www.goaliestore.com

The graphics on your skin must slow it down some, but I think the problem is probably also in the server.

Best of luck - it's a nice site.

I can also agree on site speed, it's not frustrating slow, but I can't see it holding a very large group of members.

I'm on 10mb cable

DSL here at home, backboney internet at work, and the site is pretty slow on both. But I'm not sure I care that much yet. If the discussions turn out to be good, navigation doesn't have to be snappy as far as I'm concerned, though if it got much slower than this I might find it hard to use. I'm hoping it proves it can bear some traffic without bogging down more.

Off thread topic, but the color scheme is very easy on the eyes, more pleasant (for me) than the high contrast, black background designs I've been looking at on too many other sites. Good job on that score.

Try testing the homepage speed, guys, by refreshing it a few times- and plese get back to me ASAP. Thanks for the responses so far, though.

If it is indeed a server issue, I'll call up my host to get it resolved. In the meantime, I'll have a look at vBulletin performance options.

Also, please test the speed of http://themotec.com/Forum/ -does it pose problems? It's my original forum, also running vBulletin.

I've now added a lo-graphic skin for those experiencing performance issues; I hope it helps! http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/index.php?styleid=4

I'm still borwsing through the vB options, however.

Mo, both the fixed version and dial up are both faster for me. I love the dialup one and will be using it as it just looks cool!

what speed problem?

Maybe it's been fixed, maybe I'm just a patient dial-upper, but I don't have a problem with the speed. I'm not even sure there's a difference among the skins, although I'm too lazy to actually check that! Great site, whatever the speed.

Hi Adam

I visited your other site from my home (satellite) connection. It's much faster for me than this one.

Interesting- that must mean that there's either something wrong with the DNS setup (which is very new), or something wrong with the database configuration.

Equinox, I'm glad you like the skin

I'll get on top of things in a second here...
