Hi John,
I read your review about the X-5. I have the same camera and here's how you turn off the Pentax-startup-screen.

1. in the Playback view while a picture is displayed press the mode-button (or arrow down)

2. scroll through all the playback-menu options to get to screen 2/2

3. enter the 4th option after the DPOF setting (the one with the Pentax-Logo)

4. now you can assign a custom photo, exposure program display or nothing for the startup screen.
