Hi Ramiot - yes I am happy with mine - it offers a very wide range. It can be hand held, however it is heavy and very large. It is not a subtle lens a monopod is a good idea, it is very slow on the long end (f6.3) so good light is essential. The picture quality is very good; there are several members here that have one. You should search the lens section for birding ideas. I would say if the birds are stationary and you have good light, it will work, However for a few more $$ you might want to look at a DA* 300mm (f4) and a 1.4, 1.7 2x TC. IF you are OK with manual focus there are several good lenses for much less money. To me the Bigma's selling points are range and IQ - I would not consider a top end birding lens, however if the subjects are not really moving much , it is a good lens.

Several other members have posed the same question for birding only most do not choose the Bigma. Search the lens sections and post a question with what you want do exactly - you will get lots of advice.

    Good Luck.
