Weekly Challenge #94 "Balance" - Winners!

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this weeks challenge. I understand that 'Balance' isn't the easiest to interpret nor is it as fun bokeh, especially with Pentax lenses. however we got some great entries none the less, and I have tried to judge them on not just strictly the textbook definition of photographic balance but on the ideas of balance presented by the individual photograph.

first up are the honorable mentions in no particular order:

clearly a demonstration of textbook balance, and a good one at that.

another clear example of balance, like the above photo.

an excellent display of both subject as well as light balance, with beautiful colors to boot.

I really enjoyed this photo, and the comical take on 'balance' is very good indeed.

the visual impact of this photo is excellent, and another great interpretation of balance.

3rd place:
this particular photo is exceptional in its presentation, and the balance ob both subject and colour, as well as the clear symbolic balance makes for an excellent and cute photo. B&W might have put this photo on top =)

2nd place:
I really enjoyed this photo due to the simple composition and overall excellent balance. it displays both textbook photographic balance as well as a lovely whimsical scene with the slightly comical balance of spacing between the birds.

1st place:
first off I must confess, I am a sucker for lovely B&W photographic work, regardless of subject matter and I wont lie, that did play a tiny roll in my judging. however this particular photo; although very simple in subject matter, I feel displays a truly excellent photographic composition. the balance of subject matter (almost a lack thereof) with the balance of light (and we all know light is the key to quality photography) creates a wonderful balance of tone with the great intersection of shadow. it makes me want to explore the photo and get to know it. simple, but very well done.

again, thanks to all the entries, and thank you for the patience exhibited in awaiting my judging. (im on an odd time schedule) I wish Gary the best of luck, and look forward to the next challenge!

Great job to all! I interpret balance in a different manner, I guess- but the winner is duly deserved of the title! Way to go, Gary!

And to think, my other shot to enter was this:

Thanks for the honorable mention.
My 8 year oldson is uber excited. This is his first photo entered in any sort of contest. As I mentioned, he took the shot with his little Pentax Optio.
It was a shot he "saw" and composed all on his own. He has a great eye. I wish I had thought of the shot...but I resisted the urge to take the same picture...I would have loved to get this shot on my K100.
Anyway, thanks for making my kids day!

Thanks Seamuis, it was pure fluke I took that shot the day before (I think) you set the challenge. Give me a couple of hours to think of something.

Thanks for the 2nd Place honor! much appreciated.

Big congrats to Gary for that wonderful winning shot. I do love the texture of what appears to me to be a weathered potting bench or some sort of outdoor work surface. The geometry of the shadow pattern is really wonderful.

I also really love the mice photo - very yin&yang and well done!!
