Weekly Challenge #96: "Opposing Gravity"

Having reviewed the many innovative and varied titles in the history of this challenge - soon to be at its 100th week - I would like to propose the following title - "Opposing gravity"

This is wide open to interpretation. A very simple and obvious example is the little insect here in flight, preparing to land.

However, there are many, many more interpretations - a ball or projectile in flight, a weight-lifter in action, a highly cantilevered building ... I leave it to you.

Because of the wide spread of subjects that may portray the title (and because I've never judged before ) innovative interpretation and appropriateness to the title will rank high as well as photographic quality.

This contest will close Tuesday, April 28 (7 days). I will post the judging results Wednesday, April 29

I'm looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

_____________________________________
The rules are as follows...

1. Post ONE photo (max 1000x1000).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be color or B&W, your choice.
3. Post your single picture in this thread, and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

You can oppose gravity for a while, but eventually it wins.

Great idea for a challenge!

Here is my humble contribution. Probably not a great example, but what the heck.

Taken last year at the Fergus Highland Games.
This rather large Scottish gentleman has just released a 30 pound ball of iron in hopes of it defying gravity and landing some 50 feet from where he is standing.
If you missed it, the ball is hung in space near the upper left corner. Also on the hook for breaking the law (of gravity) is a handful of chalk just above the athletes right elbow that was released when he snapped the ball.

My only regret is that I didn't get a good view of his face; he was really grimacing!
(Also, note the wee lad in the lower right. He seems to have a birds-eye view of what a Scotsman wears under his kilt.

I'm IN! Love these challenges. It's such a nice way to get to know the photographers here and it's a great way to have a short term project that keeps you thinking.

That's the stuff Pardes. I like to take a shot for a challenge rather than go through my old stuff.
You're right, it does promote a sense of camaraderie.

As for opposing gravity, I've opposed it most of my life, it's about time we had a new system.

Good challenge Kevin, you wait 'til you come to do the judging.

Very timely title for this week's challenge. Posting this shot from today for fun only, I want to work a little harder on the challenge, but since my son took his first steps just a few days ago I felt it quite apropos...

Usually she has her parents climbing the wall (a bit strong willed this one).

"Learning to Fly"

I love these challenges because it gives you an opportunity to continue to look for the interesting themes that haven't yet been announced when you shoot.

Here's my submission for this one; I'll quote Tom Petty on this one and call it "Learning to Fly". :-)

Alan, yeah, he's definitely "feeling the force" this week.

J.Scott, great framing on that shot. I have a difficult time getting the wife to go to the games - she thinks its all about hot beer and massive fried turkey legs...

Wow! Great surf shot, Robert!

Tim, looks like your daughter is aiming to give Trinity a run for her money.

Legacy, I'm reminded by both the shot and the Tom Petty quote of something my instructor said during my first skydiving lesson 10yrs ago: "The human body WILL fly - we just have a really crappy glide path".

This is one of the first 10 pictures I took with my K200D - my first "real" camera, which I got almost three weeks ago...

Tim! Love the pic! Trinity is in trouble.

Take your pick here on defying gravity.

Gary, excessive gravity in situations is always to be opposed

And I'm keeping quiet all week 'cos I'm dreading having to decide at the end of all this.
My god, these are people's KIDS that you have to decide between...

Kevin.
