Project 52 Low Key Winner

Man it's no fun being judge! I am having this much trouble with 4 images, I can't imagine what it's like when there are many more entries. But anyway, here goes...

I've decided since there were only 4 entries for judging, I would critique all four as best I can and pick one as the winner.

mithrandir: I kept going back to your image again and again. I like the composition and the soft light falling on the leaves. I felt the slightly overexposed lights in the streetlight drew my eye away from the surroundings, though given the conditions it's clear there was no avoiding this.

seacapt: very nice and interesting subject. the color is maybe a bit oversaturated for me.

daacon: I think you've definitely got a low key photo there. Perhaps a darker colored shirt would have drawn more attention to the subject's face/eyes.

and this week's winner (second in three weeks!) is Tsukiouji's low key still life of the Ukrainian? wine?...please share with us what the beverage is!

One of the things I read about low key photography was the light typically highlights the contours of the subject and the dark areas are thrown into shade. I feel Tsuki has done that here as the contours of both the bottle and glass are visible in certain areas and the shadow areas have gone black.

Well done Tsuki, well done everyone. It really was difficult picking a winner, as is usually the case I'm sure. On to another challenging theme, multiple exposure.

P.S. Tsuki, as for your other shot...I like the subject and the idea, but maybe the shadows on the shell itself are just a tad harsh for my taste. Try again with a tiny bit of fill on the right side of the shell?

Thanks for the comments Dan and I actually missed the cutoff (posted a day late) but appreciate the feedback. Congrats to all , it was a tough subject but made me do something consciously this time (low key). I would agree on the winning shot well done Tsukiouji'

Dan , good job judging and thanks for the comment. You are right about the oversaturation. Sometimes editting on my laptop is deceiving. This was taken in natural light and shadow and the composition leaves something to be desired . Here is how it looked straight out of the camera. Thanks

Congratulations to Tsukiouji on a very nice rendering. Thanks to all who participated because we all learn from each other's attempts at the week's project. Thanks Dan for a bang-up job of judging. Now its off to multiple exposure land.

Thank you. But honestly, I dont think my photo deserved to win.
I don't like wide-angle distortion on my photo. Now it feels for me, that it would be better if shot with mild telephoto.

>still life of the Ukrainian? wine?...please share with us what the beverage is!
Dan, you are right, that were indeed an ukrainian wines, produced at Crimea. The one in a glass was a marque Cabernet Souvignon, and the one in a bottle was an ordinary red table wine that was chosen for a dust on a bottle.

>Try again with a tiny bit of fill on the right side of the shell?
Thank you, I'll try it, as the idea is really worthy.
