PP Challenge #8 - Street scene (15 Oct 09 - 22 Oct 09)

Welcome to PP Challenge #8. The image to do your PP stuff on is a street shot from Peru. I'm looking for ingenuity beyond the PP basics on this one.

Thanks again to Tim for setting up the generic Mediafire Account
Mediafire Account Log-In Name: pentaxchallenge@yahoo.com
Password: postprocessing

RAW (PEF) file link (13MB): Peru street scene - PEF

Full size JPEG (2.3 MB): Peru street scene - jpg

The Challenge will close for entries in 1 week - i.e. 9:00 pm (Pacific Time) on the 22th of October, or until Oct. 25 if needed to get more entries to judge. (I'm hoping that this challenge will be reasonably well patronised)...

This is the image straight from the K20 using DA 16-45mm, no PP, only resized.

The Long Walk Home

Post Processing with PSP X: Going for an old, faded image look with this one.

1) Crop
2) Histogram Adjust - mostly bumping gamma
3) Channel Mixer : Red @ 0 - Blue @ 110 - Green @ 0 with monochrome box selected and Output Channel set as Grey
4) Resize to 1600 pixels on longest side
5) USM Radius 2 - Strength 100 - Clipping 5 (2 times)
6) Adjust/Add Noise: Gausian Noise 41
7) Effects/Photo Effects: Sepia @ 48
8) Resize to 800 pixels on longest side
9) Levels adjustment: Gamma bumped to desired faded look
10) Add Border

Steps 4, 5, & 8 are an attempt to mimic the Marc Adamus sharpening method used with Photoshop.
Tim

Good work Tim, looks like a long lost photo discovered in a box in the attic.

While Juan Locked Up, Jacinta Started The Trek to Church

  • When I first saw this picture, I envisioned it as a painting. To achieve a usable dynamic range, I took it into Lightroom and created 7 versions at different EVs. These were merged in Dynamic Photo HDR and then filtered as a watercolor. Final levels and curves were applied in Paint.Net as was dpi for upload.

All I can see at CLOSR.IT is a thumbnail size image that lets you zoom in but doesn't enlarge the viewing area. Hopefully it is related to being on my work computer and being adobe flash player limited).

BTW: Thanks for the kind words on my processing.

OK, here's mine - remained in colour but cropped, selectively coloured in ACR, clouds deepened and glowed, foreground dry brushed, dodged and flared. Gone overboard, but what the hey - wanted to keep it coloured...

A random walk down the PP lane... Duotone in LR with a highly lightened color version of the woman partially superimposed in PS. Basically this ended up being an odd variant of the selective saturation look. Then I cropped heavily to focus on the prospective relationship between the two people. Looks like mithrandir saw this as well. Probably I should have kept some color in the doorway person to emphasize the relationship. Oh well...

Tweaked the colour and midtone contrast in Topaz Labs, softened the sky in LR and used the adjustment brush to lighten the figure of the woman and a few other bits and pieces I cant' remember. Was temped to crop but liked it as it was.

Righto- Hat in the ring again!

I also felt this should be given a "piece of art" treatment. Went all-out in PS3 with various layers converted as sketch/brush strokes, flattened, re-textured with further strokes and a canvas treatment at the end. Finally added an exposure adjustment layer to give the vibe I wanted in the image.

Decided to deepen and intensify the shadows, keeping the focus on the sky and the path/figure.

I know this is a bit super-cheesy, but it made me feel good when I was done!

We still have some time left for more entries. I'm hoping there will be a few more to judge.

Frank, You might want to consider extending the deadline. I've planned on submitting an edit but have been so busy the last week that I havn't been able to do it justice.

WEeel, then, maybe I'll tweak my entry a bit.. ;-) Not a lot, a couple things I'd like to touch up and give it more the look I'm starting to see now.
