And the answer is...

A charcoal starter chimney, a must-have accessory for the BBQ enthusiast.
The heat from the burning coals causes a reaction in the galvanized metal resulting in what you see here.

It's really a pretty common item, easily recognized by most folks who cook with charcoal and found in just about any store's outdoor/garden department. Of course the original pic was not easily identifiable, but um, that was the point.

Fat chance I could have guessed. I just use regular matches and lighter fluid.

No one around here has one of them but they all use propane.

Hank Hill would be happy to know that Canada uses propane. I would say that (being from Texas) that is a rather common item, everyday? maybe not but common none the less. cool game though we should do more of these.

Actually, we used to do exactly this. We had a game called "what is it". I looked back and the last one was in March 2007. The object was to post a very small portion of a photo and enlarge the crop from time to time until the identity of the item was guessed. The winner would start the next item.

Be fun to do it again though.

Ed

We all know you've recently vacationed in Mexico but then, that's what you'd want us to think, hmmmm. I'm looking at the lower right corner and along the top edge just to the right of center and also the extreme upper left corner. I see translucence and some sort of ribbing or striation.

Is it onions fried golden brown ???????

This might not be easy if you're under 30 years old, maybe not so hard if you're over 30.

Turntable laser speed indicator - and yes, I am over 30.

Dang, if I'm right I have to come up with something - I got nothing.
