They are Lichee nuts.
The shell is paper thin and gets hard and brittle - easy to open with the fingers.
The meat is translucent white and deliciously sweet and juicy.
It surrounds a single hard black seed about 1"x1/4".
Sometimes the meat is dried within the shell. It then has the texture of a raisin.
