ftpaddict. That big green thing is the flower bud of an artichoke.

Rickster. You were warm but... It is not a petal nor a leaf. It is a sepal.

So it is the sepal of an artichoke bud. Not only is it good to eat but quite messy and lots of fun. It has been cooked and has lost its bright green colour.
