Weekly Challenge #64 - Ruins

A native to Newfoundland, growing up and experiencing the culture and changes from the past the Province is littered with old houses, fishing stages, abandoned buildings and more interestingly WWI & II structures and American military stations and outposts. Sadly most are now abandoned from even a historical/heritage perspective but make for great places to take pictures.

Therefore I would like to introduce!
Weekly Challenge #64: Ruins

It doesn't have to be war related I just find it interesting how you can visualize the conditions or places soldiers were then compared to what we see now.

Please submit entries till midnight GMT on Thursday, July 17th, 2008.


The rules are as always:

The rules:
1. Post ONE photo (max 1000x1000).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme. It can be colour or B&W, your choice.
3. You can offer as much or as little additional information as you wish, but I'd be interested to know the location/event/whatever being depicted.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and chose 1 of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. The challenge runs for 7 days plus a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera will do or a Samsung DSLR.

Example from a walk through of the CPS-6B radar station base in Red Cliff, NL. The complete structure and dome was around 100' in height built in the early 50's.

Abandoned sheep run and yards.

This bit of Australia used to be sheep country. Grain prices and semi reliable rainfall now mean cropping is more profitable. Sheep shearing sheds are now surrounded by crops of wheat, barley and canola.

Here is my contribution. These are the ruins of what was at the lowest level of the old Minneapolis Mills as they fed into the Mississippi:

Taken on my recent trip to Dorset with the FA43 Limited. Hard to find a view without scaffolding or people. Multiple exposures with a monopod for support. I was amazed at the colour that came out!



The site of the castle is a hill between two peaks. As such it forms a natural vantage point over the only viable entrance to the Isle of Purbeck (not really an island but a peninsula). People have used this hill since 6000 BC, first as a burial site. At the time of the the English Civil War, Corfe Castle was owned by Sir John Bankes. He was away when the castle came under siege so his wife, Lady Mary Bankes, defended it. She successfully repelled the Parliamentary forces until betrayed by her own people, in 1646. They blew up the formidable construction after capture, presumably because they did not wish to garrison it.

Local people took the stone and other fixtures to make their village, also called Corfe Castle. It is one of the prettiest places you can imagine, though no more so that Langton Matravers and other small settlements about the eastern end of Dorset.

I have a bunch of building shots that would work but this is still one of my favourites along these lines.

Might not completely fit the rules but on my recent trip to Newfoundland (ironic eh?), I got this shot in a small place called 'Little Hearts Ease'. So it was another sense of irony that a place with that name might have had an event that would be such the opposite. Another funny thing was that the hull was tied to the shore as if someone might take it.
