By using google maps, I calculated that the blue-hulled sports fisher was nearly 3km (about 1.85 miles) away from where the photo was taken (Favela Guararapes)... very impressive zoom!

There are quite a few interesting examples of the zoom at work on flickr. Optically at the very long end the camera appears usable.

I purchased the Nikon Coolmax P500 instead for it's wider 22.5-810mm 36x eqiv lens and HD/HS ( 1080p HD/ high speed 240/120/60 FPS ) switch since I already have the Canon SX30 IS with 24-840mm eqiv 35x zoom that is lightyears better than Nikon at the long end for much better OIS and no focus issues.
