I need to confess: I regularly shoot canon.

What can I say, I'm versatile! 8)

I think it was my grandpa's. The battery is dead and they dont make that kind anymore, so I shoot without a meter. I just eyeball it and guess. Usually I do pretty good!
Sometimes in a difficult shot, I can grab my dads nikon N2020 and use the meter in that because I don't own a handheld meter.

I dont have any Pentax film cams, and I really want a Pz-1P baaaaad

You can get a replacement battery, zinc-air type, from Wein that'll fit and work fine in it.

Very nice Canonet! What you have is pretty much the ultimate Japanese light rangefinder (fixed-lens, that is...). I have often been tempted to get either one of those or a similar Yashica.

You can get a step-down battery adapter here:
CRIS Camera Repair and Services - Mercury Battery Adapters
It will allow you to use readily available silver cells without any modification to the camera and without the expense and limited life of the Wein cell. There is also a guy on eBay that makes an adapter that allows use of zinc-air hearing aid batteries.

Hey, no need for guilt there MJB. Heck I've been known to occasionally toss a roll through this old Clarus and they don't even make that company anymore.

I have exactly the same Canonet QL17 as you pictured. IMHO it is an excellent little film camera with an excellent lens. I have used it with Kodak Panatomix X and shot some landscape shots with it which I blew up to somewhere around 24" x 36" and cut out an 11" x 14" crop with no detectable grain and superb detail. I've always loved that camera and have film loaded in it today. Incidentally I've got a live battery in mine and it is an: Energizer EPX625G, That I believe I got at someplace like Walmart within the last year. I'm sure you should be able to get one on-line if local stores don't have one.

I'm sorry, but that Canon looks ugly... >.< Canon logo looks much better on SLRs, not range finders! just a thought though.

Interestingly, Canon's reputation until the mid-to-late 60s was based almost entirely upon their excellent series of high-end rangefinder cameras. Now, I suppose it might look ugly to some; but there is no accounting for taste, after all. The logo was originally designed to be placed on a rangefinder camera so I guess that again it is a matter of taste or lack of such.

Steve

(Personally, I like the way the Canonet looks...)

Yeah I love my Canonet, too.

Hey, I read on wiki or camerapedia that if you get a different battery than the original your exposures might be off.

Any input?

Hey, just now wondered....Pentax Rangefinder?

I don't know if you meant it to be this funny, but I just almost spit soda out of my nose

OK now that lens says 2 inch (50mm) f/2.8
I have seen lenses like for instance a 6inch, f/number and I thought the inch was the focal length. But in this case, the 2inch and 50mm are not equal, so what gives?

1 inch equals 25.4mm, so 2 inches is more or less 50mm.

well ya know, it has been a loong time since I ran a roll through it and I've been meaning to take it in for a long overdue checkup - but you went and piqued my interest in it again so I just popped a roll of Neopan400 into it to see how the "old girl" is holding up.

Let me tell you, spend a day with this gem and you'll never complain about the size of your DSLR's viewfinder again.

This is true for alkaline and silver cells unless you have an adapter to step the voltage down. The Wein cell and zinc-air hearing aid batteries have the correct voltage, but have a limited lifetime once activated by exposure to air. In addition, the hearing aid batteries are physically smaller and require an adapter to fit in your camera. I use the C.R.I.S. MR-9 adapter with a 386 silver cell in my old Ricoh Singlex TLS.
