Nikon X1 or Leica X1: Who will sell more ???

Nikon X-1 or Leica X-1: Who will sell more ???

I wonder if Nikon will need $2,000 for their rangefinder point & shoot too?

Ah, competition, I like it!

Wonder if Canon will dip a toe in this market or if they are going to stick with the small sensor compacts.

If history is any guide, Nikon will get some things right (likely excellent hi iso) and other things wrong (look at pretty much all their p&s line).

If Canon put an APS-C sensor in the G11, then you'd be on the right track (dedicated iso and exp comp dials) but you'd have to lose the zoom. The X1 is about the UI and the aesthetic. Nikon is ok on the first, not so great on the latter.

I read that sean reid said

I read that sean reid said on his tour of leica factory roll out for M-9 and X-1 that the X-1 is not made in Germany, but instead X-1 is made in Japan. If true I wonder if either Nikon or Leica are making them? Does leica have a factory in japan? More from someone excerpting Reid's leica factory tour was "panasonic" is not manufacturing the X-1 for leica. So cross them off the list and look to someone else in japan who's building Leica X-1 and maybe Nikon X-1 too. We'll know if they are identical layout clones once Nikon launches their announcement. The nikon info leak source looks pretty good to me, but you never know till it really happens.

Didn't the X1 press release say "Designed and made in Germany by Leica engineers"?

Of course you didn't actually subscribe to Sean's site, did you? I didn't think he discounted the price after launch

Leica says the X1 is made in Germany. Sean mentioned Japan. My guess is that it is both, with the body made in Germany, the guts in Japan and final assembly in Germany. Panny doesn't do APS-C so it seems safe to say that they aren't the partner on this camera. But Leica is making a u4/3 lens so who knows what the deals are.

I doubt that Nikon will release a camera with Aperture and shutter speed dials on the top plate. I don't see that fitting with any of their recent design aesthetic unless they are going to do a "E-P1-esque" retro thing.

Nope, I don't subscribe to Reid

He was off my radar until he expressed unhappiness with TOP review comments. Then he and his defenders and Mike Johnston's defenders posted numerous places and I followed the links and I read thru a few forums I never visited before while this info was all hashed out:

in public

I wonder if Leica told him to cool it?

For three days he seemed Bigger than the M9 as a few forums were a buzz. It was good to be reminded of Leica's M8 quality control failures right after it launched. Had it not been for Reid I wouldn't have given the Leica M9 or X1 a second glance.

One thing I noticed is he said he missed the M8 sensor problems during his hands on preproduction testing because magenta was the hot fashion color that season, and he primarily shot B&W with M-8.

Edit, I cannot easily find the link to the: magenta was the hot fashion color that season and mostly B&W was shot with M8, so I'll say its what I recall reading, well until I find the linky.
>>>
Edit, edit. I found where the link was but alas, it seems to have been disappeared on that post as it has since been "edited". I wish I had saved it, oh well.

anyways Nostatic, Do you pay him $32.95 annually for his camera reviews links?

Concerning Nikon S3,

Its only been what, 9 years since Nikon made their last collectable & fully functional rangefinder:

I'll guess Nikon knows how to make a rangefinder still, some 9 years after their last ones
