Canon/Nikon List of camera lineup equivalents

Hi all,

I'd like to be a little more familiar with Canon and Nikon's dSLR lineup, including discontinued models. Is there a big list somewhere that has both the Canon and Nikon models that are in the same class?

Thanks.

Not exactly, but I can make a quick one for you.

Canon / Nikon

1000D / D3000, D5000
500D / D60
50D / D90
7D / D300s
5D / D700
1D / D3
1Ds Mark III / D3x

It's so much more intricate than that, and these are just all of the latest models, but I don't know of any really big charts that shows what class they're all in. Generally the numbers follow my examples though.

It's very hard to place them in realistic "classes". E.g. the 5D/D700 above: the 5D II has 21MP vs the D700's 12. The D700 has much higher frame rate, far more sophisticated autofocus, and more solid build.

@pingflood

Yeah, I was just hoping that someone out there had the time to best pick and match the Canon and Nikon lineups by functionality and relatively close date-of-releases, along with a data sheet to form my own basis of needs (well, wants). It's just to become more familiar of the different systems, since I've been almost exclusively using Pentax.

It just depends on what you want. The reality is that you can look at prices and get a rough idea of what the brands and markets consider "equivalent." But as pingflood points out, the devil is in the details. For instance, at the $2500 or so price point (plus or minus a few hundred) you have the D700, 5D2 and a900. Each has their strengths and weaknesses. A better way to go about this is to determine what it is that you're trying to accomplish and then find the camera that fits those needs/desires.

Or, from a different perspective...figure out what shortcomings your current setup has, and find the camera that fixes it.

Sorry if it was misunderstood. I'm not particularly looking at any specific camera or class, but just a detailed overall perspective. It's more of just knowing what Canon or Nikon has offered in the past and what the rivaling camera at the time was. This is simply for familiarizing myself with the different lineups rather than choosing a new camera.

I'll give it a shot.

Nikon from oldest to newiest from each level

Entry Level-Small body, no AF motor or LCD screen on to top(except D50), all use SD card, One scroll wheel well in the back..
D50-One of there first entry level DSLR. 6MP sensor, same as many other camera like the K100d, ds, dl....
D40-Same 6MP sensor as the D50, but they removed the AF motor from the body
D40x-same body as the D40 but with a 10MP sensor(same as D80).
D60-same specs as the D40x but added the sensor cleaner thing
D5000-Same small body as the D60 but new 12MP sensor(same as D90), live view, video and flip out LCD screen.
D3000-10MP sensor, no LV or video

Mid-range-More robust and bigger body than the entry level, AF motor on all body, two scroll wheel, on front and back,
D70-Same 6MP as the D50 but on a bigger body. The D70s added a better AF system and a 2" LCD screen vs the 1.5" with the D70.
D80-Improve sensor 10MP with better AF and sensor cleaner
D90-New 12MP sensor, better AF, Live view and video

Upper mid-range/semi-pro/higher end.....
D100-6MP
D200-10MP
D300-12mp
D300s-12mp with video
D700-Same body as the D300 but with the same FF sensor as the D3

Top of the line Pro body, flagship model, even bigger body, battery grip built into the body
D1
D1x
D1h
D2h
D2x
D3-12mp FF
D3x-24Mp FF

I may not be %100 correct and there are many more difference between each models. I just highlighted the main difference that I can remember.

Here's Canon:

D30 (first DSLR from Canon without a Kodak back, was about $2500 for a 1.6x crop with 3 megapixels, and has a magnesium body)
D60 (same as D30, but 6 megapixels)
Digital Rebel (first Canon DSLR released under $1000, plastic cheap body and 6 megapixels with a 1.6x crop)
10D (close to D60 body, 6.1 megapixels...no EF-s compatibility, the Rebel was the first camera with the EF-s mount)
20D (8 megapixels, 5 frames per second, first great sports camera...1.6x crop)
Digital Rebel XT (3 frames per second, small LCD, but incredibly fast compared to the original rebel or 10D, 1.6 crop)
5D (Canon's first full frame camera with a magnesium body)
30D (8 megapixels, magnesium body, 5 or 3 fps...with a new 2.5 inch LCD and spot metering which the 20D didn't have)
Digital Rebel XTi (2.5 inch LCD from the 1.8 on the XT)
40D (6.5 fps, 3 inch LCD, 10 megapixels, first model with live view, magnesium body)
Digital Rebel XSi (first Rebel with a 3 inch LCD, 12 megapixels, live view, and spot metering (Rebel XTi didn't have spot metering, 3.5 frames per second, and the first Rebel with an SD card)
Digital Rebel XS (entirely stripped down version of the XSi, same body style, but 2.5 inch LCD, and only 1.1 fps in RAW, but 3 in JPEG until the card is full...10 megapixels like the XTi)
50D (6.3 fps, 15 megapixels, high res LCD, magnesium body)
5D Mark II (first full frame camera with video, live view, 21 megapixels, high res LCD)
Digital Rebel T1i (first Rebel with video, high res LCD)
7D (new lineup, dual processors for 8 fps at 18 megapixels)

I didn't include any of the 1D or 1Ds series cameras since they're too overpriced for anyone to buy anyways.

Just because you can't afford one doesn't mean it's overpriced.

They are great cameras and if you want something weather sealed and bullet proof your only option in Canon land.

I was dating the daughter of a radiologist for a while. He had 3(!) 1D/s series bodies. So I guess SOMEONE can.
