Wow, there are some fantastic images here. I spent 2 hours agonizing over a top 5 list. I finally selected based on this definition of negative space.

Composition and the Elements of Visual Design

Bravo to all who participated. Great work!

Seriously, this is a very hard one to vote on. The number of excellent images is really something. Five... must choose only.... five...

All are good, some are great. A few were really outstanding and blew me away. I do agree that not everyone hit the theme exactly on, but all were worth viewing.

tough! for me, only 2 entries really footed the bill... OTOH, mostly all photos are great photographs (maybe i should involve myselve more with "positive" and "nagative" space issues... these concepts were totally new to me although i used them over all these years...). on pic. 44, i'd photoshop a pair of eyes onto the flower... - o.k., that wouldn't be "negative space" but photographic negativity as such.

WOW, some really beautiful shots and all technically great. I guess negative space means different things to different people. To my mind I had to pick 5 from 7.

+1 to all said. I love it too that I was present when the plan was hatched for schmikey's crop... my hope & prediction is schmikey ftw!

Link to what helped me.

For those of you that have posted questions about Negative Space... I had posted this link in the contest thread because it had helped me to understand negative space a bit better. If you missed it here it is again... Apogee Photo Magazine, June 1996, Composition, Part 2

This blurb from the second page helped me...

Negative space is not just the absence of something. It has weight and mass, and plays an important role in defining your subject.
There are some amazing photos this month... and people have viewed negative space differently in some aspects but that is what ART is all about..

Must... pick... fiiivvveee!!! But I got 10

What a selection of top notch images. Hafta agree that some didn't really fit the bill but it was still difficult to chose 5.

Glad we had just done a study on 'space' in my design class (even if I didn't have time to enter a shot). Congrats to every one on their entries. You've done a magnificant job!

Should the subject interact ?

Very nice shots, but many of them have a subject that not really interacts with the space...

It is the interaction that makes the picture interesting.
