Quick Q on Takumars?

Hey folks,

I'm not a beginner, but I am a newb when it comes to Takumar lenses!

I notice that I have to have atleast +1.0 tp +2.0 exposure compensation (if not more) to make my shots bright enough when I'm using Takumar lenses with the M42 adaptor. Is this normal?

I am assuming you are in Av mode? My experience is exactly the same with my K200D. about +2 EV with big-aperture lenses, and closer to +1 EV when stopped down to smaller apertures. It definitely makes Av mode less useful. I pretty much stopped using it and shot in M mode with my Taks. I will say again, that I can't figure out why pentax couldn't make Av mode operate the same as green-button stop-down metering mode when it doesn't detect a A-series or later lens.

On a side note, the K-7 is slightly different. It requires a constant +0.7 EV compensation in Av mode to match green-button stop-down metering in M mode. Much more useful since it seems to be very predictable. I've tested this briefly with a few different SMC Taks (85/1.8, 135/2.5, and 35/2).

Same thing here with the K200D and M42 supertak 50 1.4.

It may be the case that the electrical contacts on your camera's lens mount need to make electrical contact with the camera case.

Put a piece of aluminum foil over the contacts before mounting the m42 lens & see if it helps the exposure. If so, you might consider removing some paint from the base of your lens to make the necessary electrical contact.

Short circuiting the lowermost contact on the camera's mount makes at least a one stop difference with my K100D.

Most Takumars aren't wide enough to cover the contacts anyway, in which case scraping paint is a moot exercise.

Alrighty. good to know that I'm not out to lunch on this one!

Although, with a camera like mine which only goes up to +2 exposore comp., what happens if I want to blow out my highlights and get a +3 exposure?... guess that's the limit hey? (or buy a new camera...)

How about switching to manual for that shot?

I usually do this when it needs +3. It doesnt come up all that often anyway.
