Which remote cables can be used?
Posted by Ole, 09-07-2006, 10:21 PM Ole is offline

The more recent Pentax cameras do not accept the classic threaded cable releases.

They instead accept an infrared remote (Remote Control F) and/or a dedicated cable release as listed below:

DSLR:
  • K20D, K10D, K200D, K100D, K110D, *istD, *istDS, *istDS2, *istDL, *istDL2
    • Cable Switch CS-205
    • Remote Confrol F
  • K2000/K-m
    • Remote Confrol F
Film SLR:
  • *ist
    • Cable Switch CS-205
  • MZ-S
    • Cable Switch CS-105
    • Cable Switch CS-130
    • Release Timer Switch TS-110
  • ZX-5N/MZ-5N, ZX-5/MZ-5, Z-70/PZ-70, Z-20/PZ-20, Z-10/PZ-10, Z-1/PZ-1, Z-1P/PZ-1P
    • Cable Switch F
  • SFXN/SF1N, SFX/SF1, SF7/SF10
    • Cable Switch F

The remotes that work are the original Pentax cs-205 or the Canon RS60-E3

Or aftermarket versions of either.. (just check ebay)...

If you want to DIY the link above has the needed information. A lot are just shutter but you can also have one that does focus. Plus way of keeping the shutter on is handy for long exposures.

Very straightforward. costs less that $10 to make. All the parts are readily available, got mine at Radio Shack. Works better than the old fashion mechanical cable release for film slr's. You can set the camera for 2 second delay and mirror lock up (K100D) so you get even less vibration on a tripod. The bulb mode switch is a nice touch.
I was a bit leary of ordering one of those on ebay that comes from China and am too cheap to get the genuine article.

Personally, I'm disappointed that cameras these days don't use plain old cable reseases. I have a 4x5 and an RB67 that can use regular cable releses. So do my MX's.

But the newer cameras all need some sort of proprietary release that you can't just pop into the local camera shop and buy.

grumble, grumble, gripe and mumble!

The ebay knock off cable releases work just fine, and cost much less than the brand name models....

Would something like this off of ebay work. It is a wired/wireless one. I had something similar to this for my 20D and it worked great.

I prefer the Linhof release. It costs a lot of money, but it lasts for a long time. A not especially release worked fine on my RB676 but it wouldn't trip the wide angle 90mm on my 4x5.

Can't someone rig up an adapter that plugs into the mini plug of the cameras and accepts a standard cable release, all it has to do is short the contacts, after all.

Apparently not. I guess I'll just have to tinker.

» Which Remote Control for K10D?

Can anyone kindly throw light on the most suitable wireless remote for the K10D? There seem to be a few versions of the Remote F and I am confused. Looking to use it for time photography (bulb) and would of course prefer it to focus prior to releasing the shutter. (Apropos, doesn't Pentax have a camera back for teh K10D to control functions? (Example: Command Back 90 for the Canon T90). Thank you.

I don't know about "which version" of the Remote F, I thought there was only one. I bought mine from Amazon for under 20.00 and it works with my DL and K10D.

I found out that Opteka RC-7 remote control will work on K10D also, and it is like $12.95 US in Amazon.
Don't know how good is it tho.

I am finally getting back to responding to this thread. I have had this remote for about a month now and have used it on a few shoots now flawlessly. It does focus with half press. It also does Bulb, but you have to hold the button down the entire time which is a pain but it will do.

I am not sure how far out it works. But it is farther than the infared remotes. I kind of wish now that I would have got the Pentax F remote since I have the grip and could store it in there. Oh well, this one works.

The only thing I don't like is the battery door on the remote is cheap and barely stays in place as is. I am afraid it is going to break off sooner or later considering it is just thrown in my bag at the end.

If you're tinkering, this instructable may help: http://www.instructables.com/id/E39XW91POAEZ7C935Q/ -- okay, maybe not directly, but there's a link to a wiring diagram...

Well, I had fun making one!

I built this remote using the wiring diagram but purchased the jack. Works great on the ist, K100 and now my K10.

I used one of these:
Twin1

Although they do make one for the Pentax ... it just uses the IR remote ... and also a cable as well.

all it uses is s 2.5mm stereo jack (both ends) and plugs straight in the side of my K10D behind the door.

The IR remote works nicely with the 3-sec IR remote delay and can use the AF prior to taking the shot as well.

Also with the cable in place and hooked up ... Bulb mode works well (with a half shutter setting on the side prior to truggering the shutter) ... button on allows half press AF as well with cable in place.

And it wasn't too badly priced either fro my local camera shop ... was $40AUD. Which to me was cheap anyway.
