Are the DS JPGs too highly compressed?

No time to do the real testing (controlled environment, temperature, lighting, set up, various parametres are just too much to do) and there is always human error when some sort of comparison is made (biases argue against biases)

Joele showed me a link before - regarding DS having less in built sharpening(jpeg format) compared to nikon d50 model using same sensor. Both Sensor size and quality are the same for nikon D50 and pentax DS. When good pentax lenses are used on DS, the images are really really outstanding with rich brilliant colour that is just amazing even in jpeg form (jpeg format from DS are just usually considered to be noisy; most people shoot in raw format with DS model)


And pentax fa limited lenses do give that unique silouette like the edges are oozing out of the backgrounds. When people told me jpegs straight out of DS are not good in quality, I do not believe them. I owned every single canon L prime except 300/2.8 400/2.8 600/4 1200/5.6; so i am quite critical about lens quality here. I tend to use my precious limited lenses a lot and hardly use raw conversion programmes lately. DS are just that outstanding already.

There is usually no evidence of over compression from jpegs taken out of DS model.

I submit photo stocks on line to istockphoto.com which is most critical of image qualities submitted. No knockbacks for these overcompression issues.

Canon 10d DIGIC II is not far different from 20d sensor but canon 10d is poor in expressing yellow while this problem was corrected in 20d. 30d improves in the area of AF speed. In raw form, CMOS sensor is noisy but the conversion software inside cropfactor cameras are superb to convert pics to jpeg. That is why when i do protraits on people, the skin tends to be smooth and friendly. While DS shows every follicle of the model (just that sharp), DS is just that sharp.

I definately get better reults when printing at 12x18 using RAW rather than jpeg, no question. Definately gives me better DR. jpeg is pretty good up to A4 though.
