K-5 ISO6400 vs ISO80 - Advanced NR Study...

I won't bore you all with the details, but someone mentioned we could do better.
And since this is a new system and there's always room for improvements... why not go for the gold!

Having said that, here are a few ISO6400 sample of what I like to call the 'advanced noise management method'. Which is nothing more than applying NR selectively throughout a scene rather than globally.

Tools used: Topaz Denoise, Focalblade, and PS masking
Time to render: 4 to 7 minutes.(Depending on methods)

Original mention:
At the top of the mug there are lots of marks on the ISO80. they are not present on the 6400.
Solution: Advance Noise Management

Final Render:
ISO6400, w/ANR:

GLOBAL NR, Method: ISO6400, NR

Advanced NR Method: ISO6400, ANR

ORIGINAL: ISO80

...full size image cab be downloaded here.

It could still use a little tweaking(white and dark peak control(sharpening mask), however, the fact the ANR version has been overshot(detail wise) is a very positive sign toward perfection.
The question now is... if we can get this out of a JPG... what can we expect from RAW files?

And now... I think the relative ease this sensitivity is making it to achieve such results is a sign that we should now be turning our attention toward the ISO12800 output end of things..

That's ISO 6400 ?
There is so much detail texture in the condensate on the mug, even after NR...

I need a beer after this

This test proves nothing....
latest "look how it good it is"tests indicate that you will need nosehair pics to prove it

Good work with this John. Something to further masticate over... (word choice intended )

There's more and more brought out in these high ISO shots it's hard to critique them... and harder to resist the K-5 bug. Thanks for the work in sharing these results.

I guess that was me John. Well done. I know the improvement is marginal, but its there. For critical high ISO work, I would expect images to take around 5-10 minutes to get perfect noise wise.
Yeah, I think we all want to see some RAW conversions now.

Yea, I'm actually quite glad you brought it up.
I was going to settle on the initial results, but you're comment justified investigating further into the NR process which I think was well worth the efforts.

I also think its very at this level(with this particular file), we can almost say, ISO6400 is worthy of professional use. Which is rather huge if we factor in sports, bird watching, and the various events that would lean heavily in low light conditions. Still... were haven't seen enough of the system at work to conclude it's a solid win just yet. And so there's much more to see and consider in terms of performance to look into yet.

PS. I am really hoping someone will post DNG/RAW files similar to these for us to look at. I know it's alot to ask for, but it would mean a great deal for those of us waiting in the side lines on what to expect from this new system in the field.

Misread that The new Pentax Noisehair test. Where has this facial hair fixation come from?

btw, JB cant wait for the RAW samples. it will also be nice to see RAW comparisons between K-5, K20D, K-7, Kx samples from ISO 6400 - 12,800 (25,600).

anyway, from your own personal observations, how does the ISO 6400 jpegs compared to your K20D/k-x RAW converted and PP NR results?

IMO, the K-5's ISO 6400 is as clean as the D700. although the details and sharpness is on the D700 is superior. however, I would take this with a grain of salt since these are post-processed jpeg and not RAW.

He's just making 2 layers and selectively using a mask.
