Is the K-10 still a good camera or is it outdated?

Hey there everybody,

I'm very new to DSLR's and was just wondering is the k-10 still one of the best or has it been made obsolete by the k-7 ect. I see alot of K-10's on ebay for under Two bills. Just wondering and thanks to all who lend there info.

Austen,
As far as ANY camera being made obsolete by a newer model, it all comes down to what you use it for.
If you shoot low light situations, the K10d may be considered obsolete. I still shoot with my K10d, including paid shoots. I am still very pleased with large prints (20 x 30 and up), so I don't consider it obsolete. I am planning to add a K20d to replace my *ist DL in my kit. But if I were shooting low-light events more, I would be after the K5 right away.

It's as good as it ever was, but newer cameras have come along that are better. But, you need to be careful buying secondhand. Get an assurance it works, make sure it works ASAP when it arrives, and send it back ASAP if there are problems.

Hi Austen,

FWIW: I have a K10D, K-7 and K5.
The K10D makes wonderfull pictures.
For me it still beats the newer models on a few subjects:
1) Colour. The colour rendering is IMHO better than that of the newer models.
2) Ergonomics. The K10D ergonomics I like best.
3) K10D can do tethering, the others not!

The newer models (not comparing with the K-x/r) strong points:
1) Have AF tuning (K10D can do that in debug mode)
2) Much better dust removal system (bring a blower and a very soft brush on a K10D trip)
3) K-7: a little better ISO performance, but a noise pattern I don't like at all. K-5 much better ISO performance, best noise pattern.
4) K-7: 10%, K-5: 20% more dynamic range
5) K-5 has a usefull LiveView mode
6) K-5: much better AF performance in low light

I've travelled around the world with my K10D and made the most wonderfull photo's.
The camera is robust and strong and has a great IQ. It is only in special circumstances that the newer models will deliver better results.
The K20D and K-7 sensor results in low light I don't like, I'd rather have more of the K10D noise.
If the price is not too high, you cannot go wrong with a K10D.

I still use mine. Its sensor has a different quality from those used today, and I especially like it with manual, film-era lenses. Its viewfinder (with a replacement screen) is also well-suited for that. Its exposure metering with these lenses can be a little challenging, but I would think it is worth $200.

It's not obsolete, it can still produce wonderfull pictures. It did not win a TIPA-award for nothing in 2007 and also an Eisa-award in 2008. Compared to newer generation camera's you might miss some functionality but the most important functionality is already on the K10D.

Same with the *ist D.
Way obsolete now when compared with the current flagship model, but that doesn't stop the *ist D and K10D from continually producing excellent images.

I have a K10D and *istD as well as my K7D

I use them all,

While newer cameras always come along, the old bodies still get use.,

I have both old bodies set up with split image finders for my Tak's and K mount MF lenses

The K-5 has been the closest to giving me a reason to upgrade my K10D, but I'm still very happy with my camera so I'm still happily using it.

I have kept my K10d as my backup camera and still use if quite a bit. It is a great landscape camera. I keep my wide angle on it and use my K5 for my mid to longer zoom.

In my opinion, a good, used K10 is one of the best photographic values on the market these days. Not great for hand held low light or fast action (I keep mine pegged ISO 800 or lower), but otherwise a very robust, full-featured tool that takes excellent pics.
