The AF button on the K10D

Finally got a chance to play with my new pentax setup, and so far I really like this camera. I was actually quite impressed by the autofocus with the 43/1.9 (specially after all the bad publicity the K20D recently got for not updating its AF).

I was wondering how most people here use the AF button. The Sony A700 also has an AF button that I had setup to toggle between AF and MF. So if the camera is set in MF, the AF button would do a one-shot autofocus without changing the focus mode, and if pressed in the AF mode, it would disengage the focus mechanism so you can do manual focus. Is something like this possible with the K10D (I understand the DA lenses do this automatically, but what about on older lenses?)

Scroll down the page a little bit and see there is a three page thread entitled "How do you use the AF button."

Search is a wonderful invention...

So it looks like I by setting it to "cancal AF", I can get the camera to not autofocus, but it does not disengage the autofocus drive. At least not in FA lenses

The only way to manualy focus FA lenses (or Tokina AF lenses) is to set the focus switch on the front of the K10D to manual. That retracts the focus motor from the lens. If you force manual focus on a FA lens you can damage the gearing/focus motor.

As for how to use the AF button (I am an advocate for de-coupling AF from the shutter button) please review these threads.

Auto-focus: how do you use it?
too mention a few. No - I will not get out my soapbox - again.

Lots of stuff to search for - but it does get to the point where you have read this somewhere before.

The Elitist - formerly known as PDL (Still using the AF button to focus - that is what it is there for)
