Nice shot RH, I've got a spot up in the mountains I'm heading to tonight. I was hoping to get some sleep early but that hasn't happened. I might pull a all-nighter:-). I'm a bit worried about some bears up there, I've seen some scat but that's why I got Spike! Of course the little bugger can outrun me so he might not be much help. If I have this figured right I have a chance at some good shots.

I never bring them, but we should all bring those bear bangers while heading out in those conditions. I don't know what it's like where you live, but a late, heavy frost has wiped out most of the berries here. So they're expecting the bears to be a real problem this year

We still have plenty of berries Little Laker, in fact it is HOT here this weekend. Spike and I made it just fine. We got there about 3:30am, spectacular morning.
If anyone checks the exif, the lens info is wrong. I was shooting on a tripod with timer and didn't change the lens setting. This was taken with my DA* 300/4 with my Pentax A 2X-S converter and has been cropped. RH's teleconverter must be something else because I can't resolve the craters on the left side of his pic with my setup on a full moon, I can do it with a quarter moon. So I want to share this photo. She was dropping like a rock at this point and I had to shoot at 1/30 sec, f4.5, iso 400, I wish I could have gotten a faster shutter speed but didn't want to go to iso 800 and besides there wasn't enough time to fiddle at this stage. anywho....  1/125. f6.3 iso 100

Thanks for posting a pic! I think it might help diffuse your detractors...  Well, maybe not, but at least they can't say you never post pictures!  All the moon shots here inspired me to go out tonight and grab a shot to add. I might not have bothered, since the moon's nearly full, and it's usually difficult to pull out crater detail when the moon's full. Here's the what the moon looks like from New Jersey, USA this evening!  1/125th sec, f/12.7, 960mm, K20D Curves + USM applied to improve contrast and draw out details, respectively... -Chris |

Here's my contribution to the thread, taken a few days ago during the lunar eclipse:
 Six exposures taken every three minutes on a table (no tripod) with my Tamron 70-300 at f13 and 1/8" ISO100.

 This one was done Aug. 16 on the Pentax 55-300mm. Shot at ISO 125, F8, 1/250 sec 300mm. These are the settings suggested by Bryan Peterson in 'Understanding Digital Photography' who says to shoot it the day before it goes full. No PP other than cropping.

Aside from the 960mm focal length, I think the biggest difference between my shot and the rest posted here is post processing. Adding a curves layer to boost the contrast and then a sharpening filter can really make the detail pop. I've downloaded some of the others in this thread and applied this technique and many of them are nearly as detailed as what I've posted. It really surprises me what some of you guys get out of your 300mm zooms. I tried and tried with my regular lenses for months before getting my telescope, and didn't do anywhere near as well as some of you have! -Chris |

Good Thread Rice and nice shot as well. Some other very good shots, Wildman, Marc's, Eaglerapids and StarDust (how appropriate!). Sorry Hinckc, I'm not a fan of the PP work. The shot is fine but the colours are totally unnatural with shifts in green and magenta tones.
My attempt with a Meade 1000mm @f10 1/60th tripod with sandbag and 2 sec MLU  Click on the image to view it in a larger size Same lens with StarD 2x TC  Click on the image to view it in a larger size makes me appreciate the sharpness of Wildman's shot at 1920mm! Which model of scope Wildman?
