Pentax DSLRS RAW + JPEG, and all DSLRs for that matter.

Good news for JPEG shooters

Hi Pentax friends,
Surfing the net this morning, I found this information on The Online Photographer (TOP).

A new free utility called Instant JPEG from RAW (IJFR) has just been released. It is not an application; it is a utility that attaches itself to the Windows or Mac operating systems. It also does not process or develop RAW files; it extracts the JPEG that's already in all your RAW files.
What are the benefits? No more shooting "RAW + JPEG" with most cameras. No more waiting for your converter to create JPEGs from large directories of RAW files. No more reason to shoot JPEG at all. The JPEG is there in the RAW file anyway, so when you shoot RAW you already have both. When you save RAW files in your computer or hard disk, it remains as original or digital negative for ever. It becomes easier to manipulate with Post processing.

More info:

Thanks for reading, and go ahead and shoot RAW files.

Regards,
Yvon Bourque

I try it, the jpeg is there but a jpeg of only 1 mb, not enough to replace raw+jpeg or jpeg alone

Same as Pentax Photo Browser (not Photo Lab), But, at about 1-2 megs in size, it's handy for making jpgs for a quick look in a more user-friendly editor perhaps, but not the same quality as a conversion.

For Linux users:
You can do the same by simply calling

ufraw-batch --embedded-image

It works for single files or as a batch job for multiple files.

However, the embedded JPEGs are 'one star' quality, AFAIK. This is idependent from the software used for extraction. If anybody knows how to set a higher quality, please let us know!

to elaborate, just need to select the thumbnails, right click and Extract JPEG
i use it all the time when i'm ok with the JPEG conversion. it's a Low Q file, but good enough for me
