Is the auto focus locking in on the subject?

Hey Nathan,
Sounds to me like the flash might have died (happened to my k10d)

Camera will work with the flash down. When up, it won't shoot til the flash is charged, but it can't charge because a component in the flash circuit is fried.

Maybe if you call service, they will fix it post warranty because it's happened to a number of their DSLRs, and I think it's a known weakness (they used a cheap part) in the design. I've been reading Pentax forums since I bought my K100D in 2006 and seen this topic often.

Sounds like the typical short circuit problem with the flash somewhere. Stop trying and send in the camera to Pentax for repair (if still worth it) or other part of the circuit might be killed eventually. You can of course never pop up the flash and the camera should be fine.

You have a good point. Maybe he should try a suitable external flash or use a multimeter to see if it fires the flash shoe. If it fires, an external flash would solve the problem. The builtin flash isn't so great anyway.
