*ist DL

I'm wondering, is this camera worth spending $100 less than on the K100D? The cameras appear to have the exact same features, so I'm a little confused on the differences.

Also searching for anything *ist related on here is so difficult! Got to love the Vbulliten search restrictions on the * character or some words.

The *ist DL was an earlier model than the K100. The DL was "down spec'd" to meet a price segment at the time. It is an OK camera that will do the job, but I would strongly encourage you to have a look at the K200D, it is a quantum leap forward on the other two, and (in Australia at least) bloody good value.

I have had a DL, but not a K100. Now have a K200 & K20.
Cheers.

What does the K100D have that the DL doesn't?

I believe that JPEG engine is different.
K100D has better JPEG output than any of the *istD series....
other than that and SR they should be pretty much the same...

A couple of other minor differences, but - SR is *huge*. Easily worth spending the extra $100 on. It's probably the biggest single reason people buy into Pentax.

You can compare feature sets at dpreview. The most noticeable disadvantages of the DL are: no SR, slower AF, 3 AF points instead of 11, inability to select AF points (so only the center one can be used reliably), and an earlier image processing engine.

The grip is also different and the K100D is a little larger, which may factor into your decision if you are able to try both cameras out. The K100D is really meant to replace the DS/DS2. The DL series competes in a different class. You could also try looking at the K110D which is essentially a K100D without SR.

Can't say anything about whether the K100D's advantages are worth $100 over the DL for you specifically. Personally I'll be waiting to see how the K-m shakes out as its street price settles, but I have a feeling that's probably out of the price range you're considering.

Yeah, I basically want an older DL that I can not have to really worry about keeping in perfect condition or getting stolen (I live in a college dorm) so most of those things don't matter to me. I use canon right now, and never use the IS, still get great photos, so the SR doesn't matter to me. The LCD is the same size I believe, or it might get 2.5 compared to 2.7. Either way that's much larger than 1.8 on the XT and 20D!

I upgraded from a DL to a K100D when the K100D first got released. Between the 11-point AF and the SR feature, my ratio of keepers increased substantially. I would only buy a DL as a backup body as it's a bit lighter. However, as a primary camera, the K100D is well worth the extra $100.

I have the istDL that I bought recently and sat up for m42's I also have the K100D and K10D
The thing that I miss most on the ist is the preview mode where you check your historygram before you actually trip the shutter. jim
