New K20D on 3998 actuations??

My "new" K20D was delivered 1 hour ago, actuations are showing 100-3998... What is going on here? Box was sealed, everything looks brand new. Please advice - is this correct, can one reset the actuations nowadays? Thanks. Gerrie

Did You insert a used SD card with images into it? If not then download PhotoME from PhotoME - Exif, IPTC & ICC Metadata Editor and inspect manufacturer notes- there is a real shutter count of the camera (expect some hundreds for QC and adjustment ex factory).

Menu -> Rec. Menu -> Memory :: the last option is "File No.". Un-check this one, format an SD card and cycle the power. When you turn the camera back on you should be back at "imgp0001".

Mine started at 262 - I asked my retailer and the Pentax Rep emailed me that is about the correct number of shutter actuations for factory testing.

Similarly to a short computer burn-in, failures tend to happen at the very beginning - once through the test period, the failure rate is acceptably low.

Just remember to turn "File No" back on or the camera will start counting all over again if you'll switch it on with an empty card.

It seems that all new Pentax cameras leave factory with shutter count ~250. Most likely it's factory testing.

I had the same experience as the OP and it freaked me out a little. Turns out the person testing the cameras at the store used a card with images on it and it took that number, liek this instance.

I was in Henry's (camera store) in Toronto once and the guy behind the counter was talking to a customer and holding a camera (a Canon) with his finger on the shutter button, firing burst after burst, with no card in the camera, not even looking down, but firing over and over again as he talked.

I couldn't imagine that was good for the shutter, but I guess some of these cameras are built for it. I always think of that now when people talk shutter actuations.

It was after I bought a used camera from them :| -- don't think I'll buy one of their demos!
