GX10 - k10d differences

Hi guys,

just a quick question, what are the differences (if any) between the k10d and the gx10?

The reason i ask is because there is a noticeable price difference between the 2 and i am still considering selling the 400d and getting a k10d.

thanks in advance

As far as I know, the Samsung is basically a rebadged Pentax with the PEF format removed from the RAW menu, so the only filetype available will be DNG.

Ok cool thanks.

So it looks to me like other than that, the only real difference is the body styling.

It's mostly styling, but notice that the K10d has a grip on the left (raised lip). This is may or may not be handy when holding the camera body with two hands.

The inability to save PEF RAW is a negative IMO for two reasons: 1) the RAW files aren't compressed, 2) the DNG format has no lens information in the EXIF.

Other differences apart from lack of PEF:

- interface is different
- Samsung lags behind Pentax in terms of firmware upgrade. Not sure if the 1.10 or 1.11 Samsung equivalence have been released or not.
- One user here has reported that Pentax flashes cannot be used on Samsung because the pin location is slightly different.

I hadn't heard that about the flash. Also, I don't believe the Samsung has a battery grip, and the Pentax one will not fit.

You might want to check this weeks Amateur Photographer magazine as it has a review/comparison of the GX10 against the K10D. I'm sure they found that the Pentax battery grip worked fine.

The local photo store talked to the samsung rep guy and he stated that the Pentax grip wouldn't work at all and that there were a few other differences as well, but in all if you want to go up get the K10d but if you want to stay down low get the samsung... so in my opinion if you're going from a 400D go for the K10D because you can get a lot more out of if and for it.

I read that article yesterday. I also believe that it was stated that the K10D grip DID work.

Mo is right for the most part. they are essentially the same camera.

However, I read one article (sorry don't remember which one) that says there are more difference than meet the eye. So you might want to go digging for a lot more information before you plunk down your revenue.

Additonally, Pentax is a camera company/lens company (though who is making their lenses now is in question) with a reputation for good to excellent customer service. Samsung...not so good. And although they recently came up with a firmware update one might question for how long that would continue.
Just try getting customer support at Samsung.........ain't gonna happen.

But, oft times the budget dictates the purchase. Just thought you should have the dark side explained and that the differences can and are more than skin deep between these two cameras.

I don't get AP, but if that is what they found, I stand corrected.

I find that hard to believe since the SEF-54PZF and SEF-36PZF are just the pentax equivalents rebadeged.

Perhaps rebadged and slightly modified?

That would cost too much in terms of manufacture.
Besides the Metz 40Mz-2 and 3701 foot (ie pentax TTL) that I have works fine on my GX-1S.
