Actuations , how many

I am looking to buy a used K100D of some kind .
Is there any way to know the amount of actuations using what came with the camera , no using other programs .
Do I have to just trust and hope they are telling the truth about their guess ?

The only way I know of to see the actual shutter actuations is to plug a photo from the camera into PhotoME (or other EXIF software that reports the full Maker Notes data) and looking at the "Shutter Count" in the Manufacturer Notes section.

I just upgraded to a K200D and was thinking I might sell my K100D Super. I can check to see how many shots it has taken, but it's not a very high count and is in superb condition. About a year and half old. If interested email me at crbrune@yahoo.com and I will send you pictures and pertinent data.

"Every actuation is recorded and shown in the upper right hand corner of the lcd during playback. It's also listed as the file name of every frame taken. For example, for pentax, IMGP2031.JPG would be the name of a frame taken by your camera before you rename it using a photo imaging software."


Is this true with the K10D , too??

it will be close......probably, but to know for sure, have the owner take a photo in RAW format, and then open it in photome, and look for shutter count , that will tell you the ACTUAL shutter count

Yes, I DO understand, but on both of my cameras, the ACTUAL shutter count is a bit higher than what i see on my LCD, Pentax fires off a fair amount of test shots before shipping out their cameras apparently, here is an example from my K110D, notice on the top the image number is 9080, but the actual shutter count is 9795...So the shutter count he is giving you is a bit lower than the ACTUAL shutter count. Also, I bought BOTH of my cameras new, so no one has "fiddled" with the shutter count on 'em.

it doesn't have to be a raw file (at least not on a K10D anyway, someone might be able to confiorm if that's true for a K100D). If so, get them to send an unaltered (no editing) .jpg (so it's email-able). You can check the shutter count and that it was taken recently (check the date). Don't tell them why you want it, or at least make up some other story.

The only way to know for sure is to check, as noted above.

The numbers in the LCD are just file names for the shots. Sometimes the number you had mentioned can be fairly close to actual actuations (~200 diffference - testing by Pentax). My understanding though is that those counts can be reset by the user at any time - which is why Stratman indicated it might be close...and probably is, but make sure.

Jpeg will do just fine from 100D.
My in camera counter shows 6386 while the actual count is 10400 shots higher,
due to "rolling over the odometer" and some uncounted for actuation's.
So, best to just open a sample image with something like Photome.
