Preview with LCD monitor

I am not familiar with the operation of digital SLR’s. With a digital SLR can you compose your shot using the LCD monitor (like a point & shoot), or must you always use the optical viewfinder?

A second question if you do not mind. Concerning flash, what is P-TTL and its difference from TTL?

In short, no. Because the mirror sits in front of the sensor to direct the light up into the viewfinder, you cant compose on the lcd.
The only dslr's that have a live view feature are the olympus e-330, e-510, a panasonic one and the not yet released canon 1d mkIII (although you cant use auto focus in live view mode)

Cant really help you on the flash thing, not quite familiar with pentax's flash systen.

Not on Pentax presently, but that may change in the Fall. No I am afraid you are going to have to use the viewfinder to see what's going on and view the image afterwards on the rear screen.

As to your second question, Rice High has an excellent article that answers your specific question.

Since very few DSLR's currently support composing through the rear LCD display, you obviously compose using the viewfinder. The captured image is displayed on the LCD afterwards, and stored images are also viewed using the LCD.

The P-TTL is simply Pentax's proprietary flash system. You can read more about it here...

One other thing--as far as I know, none of the current live-view DSLR's is able to auto-focus in that mode. I'm sure this easy-to-overcome limitation will change in the not-so-distance future as well.--and about that time DSLR's will be able to shoot video as well.
