Interesting! In the second one, the church and sky almost look painted
How do you like the Tamron 10-24? I've been interested in this lens since it was first announced.

I just purchased it last week and I could see I am going to use it alot indoors and out for stills and HD video. I like that there is a big difference between 10mm and 24mm . 24mm looks almost like a normal lens.

This is interesting and I agree with Eric that the church has a somewhat 'painted look' to it.

But there's something odd happening in your baseline shots. Absolutely nothing is correctly exposed. The foreground is too dark and the sky and Church is completely blown out. Passed out drunk, I could take a better shot than the first of each pair here even without HDR. Granted this is a very tough shooting setup and the HDR looks pretty good.

So how long does it take to get the shot in HDR?

The three shot HDR takes less than a second and an extra several seconds for processing.
I could have spot metered off the church but with a normal single shot the foreground would be even darker.

I see that your exposure sensitivity was set at ISO 100. I wonder if you increased the ISO you would achieve increased latitude. Back in film days using a film with a higher ISO provided increased latitude that provided more acceptable exposures in photo with high contrast. It would be interesting to try that with digital sensors.

Also you might try turning on the expanded dynamic range function.

I was not trying for anything but to compare straight automatic AV single shots vs HDR strong mode. There is no way a single shot will match a three shot HDR strong shot with that extreme lighting conditions no matter how many hoops you jump through.

BTW here is the 24mm shot in HDR standard:
