loading film

How do I load a half used can of film in the my camera, or more specifically, how do you advance forward the film to the previous exposure, say #14? Isn't tripping the shutter going to do a multiple exposure?? I'm new to film.

Load the film in the camera again. Make sure front lens cap or a body cap is in place.
Select manual or shutter priority AE mode. Set shutter to fastest shutter speed
and fire off same number of frames already exposed, plus one or two extras.
(Better to waste a frame than have an unintentional double exposure.)
You are now ready to resume normal use of your camera.
