I think you have made the right choice. It is better to be sure of your camera's operational integrity.
The MZ-M/ZX-M is a fine choice. It does not seem to have a great following, but owners think well of the camera. On-line reviews from users are quite positive. Some (especially those who have never used it) knock the camera because of its lack of TTL flash. I rarely use a flash, and so this feature would not mean much to me. I have a Pentax AF200S flash (a non-TTL flash) that I have yet to use. I have heard that flash meters (especially in good, dedicated flashes...like my 200S), are quite accurate, and, thus, good results are attainable in non-TTL systems.
