Old spotmatic bag, original?

I just scored this old spotmatic, it came in a really nice bag, but is it the original?

It is almost certainly contemporary, but there would be no such thing as an "original" bag that came together with the camera. If there were, it would be an "ever-ready" type case sold as an accessory.

I can't see very well in the photo, but the letters between the film rewind and the pentaprism look like "S1". If so, then this would be a pre-Spotmatic camera.

From what I can see, I agree with Mike... it's an S1. VERY nice pre-Spotmatic camera.

The case is in good shape. it would not be OEM Paentax, but a generic camera case. Certainly contemporary, you have a very, very nice collection there.

The external meter on the pentaprism means it is not a spotmeter and as others have pointed out it is an S1. What are the lenses you have with it and what are there condition. i have a similar bag with the little baffles and separated compartments in black. It also has a hinged compartment/tray higher in the bag for filters and covers etc. funky, aye.

That case is probably 30-40 years old, the camera a bit older.

Yes, I have the camera as introduced in April 1961 and discontinued in 1962. I have seen dates of production through 1963... so that's up in the air a little.

As this series goes, this camera is on the rarer side with circa 46,500 made. It's not as rare as an "AP," "S," or a "K" but it is the fourth rarest of the series that includes those models and which ends with the S1a and the SV.

Pentax did in fact have leather hard cases like these for storing camera, lenses and accessories. but as already mentioned I think this particular case is a bit more contemporary. it certainly isn't Pentax and its very unlikely that it is as old as the camera.

The serialnumber starts with 44 so i think it is one of the latest made.

And now some (quick and dirty) pictures:

Yep... Right as usual Séamuis... I didn't want to get into that too much... but since we've broached it... there was a whole line of OEM Pentax hard cases such as the following. One auction says it can be used for a K1000, but I think these are actually a bit older. Never been able to pin this type down in any accessory catalogs, though I have seen a whole line of black and brown leather cases in a later (but not much) catalogs. I see these in my travels quite a bit. Always felt they were about early Spotmatic on... the Asahi one might be a little older. Almost perfect for that S1.

Asahi Pentax Spotmatic Outfit carrying Case 10x9x5-Nice - eBay (item 270332541454 end time Jan-28-09 22:07:49 PST)

This is instructive with respect to the the bags available in the K1000/MX/ME timeframe... (use password "Pentax") and see pg 57

For the price you paid man ... that's a steal ... that lot is immaculate ... and that's a hell of a nice carry case as well.

All I can say is you did very well indeed.
