Jumping in!

Well I just won an auction for my first Pentax Film Camera.
I put a bid on it because of the M-50mm 1.7, but for 45$ I also get a (seemingly) good condition Pentax ME.
I've actually never even shot with a film camera (grew up with digital / disposable) so I'm excited to try...
Though I have a feeling I will burn through a role quickly, and I'll keep looking at the back of the Camera to review my shot..

Congratulations!

And first lesson--it's spelled "roll."

You have to take your time, REALLY take your time, with each shot as you're first learning the camera. Don't just take it out with the family to shoot some quick candids. That ain't gonna work.

Learn about film speeds (ISO/ASA), shutter speeds and aperture (F stops)--all interconnected and all that tell your meter "what to do" and your automatic mode "what to do" as well.

So start by shooting MANUAL mode at first to really learn.

If you have a tripod, use it, and do your first couple of rolls in the backyard or wherever else under controlled conditions. Forget the fact that it might be boring and you're just shooting a vase, but do your first few rolls of a STATIONERY object, non-moving, and get the hang of depth of field and such.

Does your scanner handle film? If so, just process the negs (no prints) to save money, and scan them yourself to start.

Just wait until you go to take the 2nd shot and the shutter doesn't work...

... because you forgot to wind the crank.

not that I have ever done that, mind you

Also funny when you take a shot and immediately look at the back of your camera. Only delayed chimping with film.
