The easiest place is probably in another K1000 body, either broken and sold for parts or in good shape and as a replacement for your existing body. The K1000 was by far the most common K series film body and many came with a split prism from the factory.

pentaxs.com may be willing to sell you just a screen if you ask.

There are other K series bodies with screens that may be compatible (though I have no first hand experience changing them) but if you were to buy one in useable condition, likely for under $100 US, then you still end up replacing your current camera.

your K1000 does not have a split-image focusing screen? what kind does it have? I was under the impression that unless one requested a different type for an extra fee, (at purchase) you would have this screen, since all K1000's shipped with split-image screens installed.

Cosmo, I believe the standard screen for the K1000 was the cross-microprism screen and the split image screen was used in the K1000 SE. I managed to pick up an inoperative K1000 SE off ebay a while back for about $10 USD. Ebay is probably the only place you'll find one unless you can get one from someone who repairs and CLAs Pentax.

It's just got a faint circle, which does nothing to help me focus. I'm going to a Pentax Pro shop tomorrow, I'll ask there if they have anything, or I'll patrol ebay for broken cameras with a split screen.

Only the K1000SE has a split screen. Standard K1000s just have a microprism focusing dot.

did not know that. both of the K1000's I have previously owned had split-image screens. and neither were SE versions.

Interesting. Were they Chinese made K1000's? Maybe near the end of production, the screens were changed to split screen. Or maybe the previous owner had the camera modified.

Is the split screen in the SE diagonallike the ME super SE?

I actually bought 2 non-SE in '84 and '85 that had the split screen. The SE was supposed to have split image/microprism. However, a good many of the K1000 had the matte screen with microprism. The data base Ole put together has a break down on this.

Eric Hendrickson told me that he has at least 3 different screens for the K1000.

Same here. My wife bought hers the year before I bought mine and it has the microprism/matte while mine had the split screen. I have a parts camera that has the microprism Matte. The SE was supposed to have the split/microprism/matte screen.

You can contact Eric Hendrickson and he may be willing to sell you one from Tennessee. The other option is to contact jinfinance (spelling) on ebay and see if he can fix you up with one. However, installing them on the K-1000 isn't for the faint of heart. It is a good camera to learn on however.

no, both were early copies. I have never owned a chinese made K1000.

I have a plain K1000 (probably early 1980s production, it came with an M50 f/2 when I got it second hand) that has a horizontal split prism in a matte circle on a matte screen.
