I tested my new Pentax K5 today, using my old Pentax M 50mm f/1.4 and generic 500mm f/8 refractor lens. It definitely handles manual lenses much better than my K7, K200D and *ist DS. With the K5 I just press the green button and don't need to make exposure compensation at all. Excellent camera indeed.

Yep. I agree.

K5 is a godsend for those of us with older manual focus glass.

A huge step ahead of my old K10 in this regard.

I even find the focusing itself, relying on viewfinder and green hexagon, more accurate with the K5 than with the K10D and K100D

I bought most of my M series lenses back in my film days. The M 400/5.6 is the only recent aquisition. With such a big investment in these lenses, when it came time to move on to digital staying in the Pentax camp was pretty much a no brainer. I'm very pleased Pentax didn't make their older glass obsolete as some other makers have. They are to be commended for this practice. These are still very fine optics and are certainly way too good to wind up in a landfill.

I don't even own any auto focus lenses at the moment. Been shooting Penax mount lenses since my first SLR. A Mamaya/Sekor 500 DTL. From there to a Spotmatic II to Ricoh XRM to Pentax ZX5n and a Pentax PZ-1p. The only camera I really didn't care for was the PZ-1p. Just too much bells and whistles. Way too long learning curve. Exposure and focus and not as complex as some would have us believe. My Pz-1p probably only has 2 or 3 rolls of film through it. Before I got any cameras that would use auto focus lenses I had already accumulated a pretty good collection of manual focus lenses. Just can't justify going with new lenses when I already have several high quality lenses.

Since they interface so well with my K5 it was a no brainer as to which brand DSLR to get. Overall I am pretty happy with my K5. I have decided that the off kilter automatic leveling system is just not worth the effort to fix. Everything else works fine.

The only thing that bothers me about my K5 is that my 300 mm lenses are no longer 300mm but something like 420 mm. 300mm is one of my favorite focal lengths. I may have to get a fixed focal length piece of APO glass in the 180 to 200 mm range.
