645D for the Masses

Heard there is a cut-down version of the 645D. Would anybody be interested if the price was the same as the Full Frame offering?

to say honest - YES. Not above USD2500-3000. I've heard about such version of 645D at Photokina 2010.

But, I think the price could be higher than USD5000.

@ogl, probably with that price. 645D sells 8K+ EU body only and 9K+ with the lens.

I'll stick with my K-5. Price would still be much for me. This offering might work for those wanting FF with money to spend.

Cut down... with what sensor size? 24x36, perhaps?

Dont't know but i imagine 645D then remove some features, sealing, Mega Pixel Etc, then arrive at the price of the FF then offering.

Other than resolution, what features are you going to cut to get the price down? The sensor to 35mm size? And that still doesn't begin to answer the problem of lens supply.

I'm not saying a distinction along the lines of the Sony A850 vs the A900 for a ~ 20% price difference would be utterly impossible from a marketing perspective, but just how much content are you willing to lose to cut the body price? Cutting into usability by removing dials and buttons just for the sake of product differentiation doesn't do much for the end user.

From a pricing perspective, 35mm full frame already runs anywhere up to $7500 plus if you're looking at a 1ds-mark IV or a D3x (or their probable replacements).

Hey i want those lottery numbers too!
A cut down model of MF would be a smart move, it would be the cheapest digital MF camera out there and if lenses are compatible with high end 645D...then pentax would hook some clients that would possibly upgrade.
Do i smell some market share coming pentax's way?
I'm sure lots of enthusiasts wouldn't mind having long fights with reasonable wives/partners/boyfriends/etc just to get their hands on one of those...and if it's not more expensive than 4000$ it's gonna be a blast!.
Good thing for competition and consumers too since it would force the other brands to fight back either by prices or Specs...and the MF companys would have either to specialize more or to offer cheaper models (I want a digital back cheap for the Hasselblad i am going to inherit!!!).
Cool rumor, hope it's true.

What is there to cut down from? The lenses are to expensive for just a 36x24 full frame sensor. The camera is as basic as it can be. Loosing the wheatersealing is just some rubbers and some time to put it together.

Maybe lowering the price (in Europe it's to expencive) would make it possible to decrease the price and sell more.

If I go for a vacation to New York and buy the 645D there, bring it home as a toerist cam, then my intire vacation is for free, that big is the price gap.
