How should I inspect a used 645??

I have no medium format experience, but I like 35mm film and I'm toying with the idea of picking up a used Pentax 645 (original), mostly for scenic photography.

I know how to inspect a 35mm body -- what else do I need to know about inspecting a 645? Are there any particular problems I should look out for?

Thanks.

Inspect it the same way you would a 35mm body. In most respects, a 645 is essentially the same, just larger. One significant difference is that the film holders (inserts) are removable, so take the time to inspect those.

Also take a look at the mirror. If you see a lot of black spots on it the silver is flaking off and a dealer in the local area told me you could stop the process, but not repiar it and that the mirror couldn't be replaced.
If it's too bad it could effect the meter since in the no flash mode the camera meters off the mirror. I went from a 35mm to a 645 and it was a great step for me.

Cheers,

Scott

Thank you both for your advice.

I just missed out on a 645 that was available locally but it's good to know what to look for the next time.

645s

You know, even if you don't plan to use autofocus, I'd think about getting the 645N instead of the original. The 645N (and 645NII) have more traditional dial controls instead of the push buttons. Just food for thought.
