Has anyone thought this could be the "Mystery rugged-looking K-mount no-VF camera" that was seen at CES?

Kinda fits the bill....
It definitely looked interesting, but can anyone comment on the dimensions?

Exactly. So why change the mount? Who needs a NEX-like camera can buy a NEX. Pentax has no reason to go into a competition with NEX. Moreover, it's safe to stay with the K-mount, for which there is a market. But the ultimate reason to keep the K mount in a mirrorless camera is... FF!

Or a GXR with the M-mount to take Leica lenses and compete with the Nex 5 I would assume a GXR body with a built-in viewfinder will come out someday to compete with the Nex 7.

Of course there should be a option to turn off that crop mode, for the people that think their DA is usable on FF. What person A finds acceptable often differs from person B.

You would also think there will be firmware to disable SDM when you want to use the camera AF motor. Like when you are using and an TC since there is no SDM TC. :-)

I don't think they can win this one. If they made a new mount camera,
people would be complaining about K lenses not being usable...
I think if the camera is modern, has some great features, like amazing MF,
it could be successful. The problem is Pentax s@cks in marketing department,
many people have no idea they make a nice range of small Limited lenses
to use with this. But that could be actually better than the new Fuji IMO.
With a small set of Limited glass, let's say 15, 43 and 77, it could be
a good small system.

If there is a new camera being announced at CP+ then this "mystery rugged-looking K-mount no VF camera" was most likely was being shown to a few special people. It is a good chance it was shown to the person that started that rumor but the person couln't really state to much since he would be under NDA.

How true. A no win situation. Somebody will always complain.

I think the Ricoh GXR will be the future for a thin register distance mirrorless camera. There is already the M-module for Leica lenses that competes with the Nex-5. Then add a new body with more processing power and an ECF and it competes with the NEX-7. Then add a K-module for Pentax lenses.

DA 40mm F2.8XS

Well, the DA40 is no retrofocus design, so it wouldn't benefit from protruding rear lenses. I guess the DA 40mm F2.8XS is meant to be a design job (and maybe cost optimization job by removing some metal) to better go together with the new design.

In general though, I see no reason why dedicated kit zooms can't be for the mirrorless only. Or one or two ultra wide angles. As long as the bulk of lenses and esp. the more expensive ones remain fully compatible.

BTW, new design ...

The rumor reports Marc Newson to be the designer (referred to as "the designer of the Talby phone") -> Talby by Marc Newson mobile phone Interface design on the Behance Network and the result is said to be like Optio and unlike K-xxx or GXR.

So, I guess it is rather square and bright.

I wouldn't mind a new collapsed FF compatible mount that had an adapter to fit K-Mount in full operation, including autofocus. But maybe I'm the minority? It would only mean they'd make lenses that don't fit on old bodies, although that will probably be the case now anyways.

The rumoured K01 is 79mm high.

A K-x is 69mm w/o the prism/VF, 83mm w VF but w/o prism and 79mm with VF and 3" LCD, i.e., removing 3mm from the bottom which is a bit thicker than required.

BTW, a NEX5 (no VF) is 59mm, a NEX7 (VF) is 67mm where E mount and K mount have the same diameter.

So, I guess it must be with an EVF if it is this high w/o a prism. Which would make the mystery sighting unrelated or fake.

Moreover, rugged-looking is unlike the rumored design (Optio-like and by Marc Newson who seems to like lean design).

OTOH, maybe no VF meant "no prism" (e.g., if only spotted from the front) and rugged looking meant the rumored leather case ...

I don't think that NEX body is masterpiece of design and controls.
The NEX-7 is not as bulky as the Q with OVF:

Pentax future is backward compatibility of a 35+ year old mount, so this must be the best way to support it.
