APS-C K1 maybe.

I was in the book store today in Kyushu and looking at CAPA one of favourite camera magazines and among it predictions it had an artists illustration of red and black Pentax K1 with APS-C 24 MP sensor, 11 point AF and 7 frames per second with Prime 3 processor. Additionally a Canon 70 with 6 fps, Digic 5, 19 points and a Nikon D400 with Expeed 3 with 9fps and 51 points. Also a Nikon D600 and Canon 3D full frame. So perhaps its going to be called K1 not K3. Also where does this put the possibility of a Pentax full frame and what would that be called. No mention of it in the magazine prediction wise.

I doubt they would name it the K1. Too close to the K-01.

OK, so they were imagining things; the specs+name doesn't sound "right" and we know they're made up. Is that even a rumour?

Interesting, I wonder what they would call any potential full frame camera then. K3 a class above K30 sounds much more logical to me. The possibility of a 24 MP sensor doesn't have me jumping with joy either after looking at what Nikon has produced with D3200 noise wise. Reasonable but not on the same level as the 16MP sensor.

I think prediction is a better word than rumour but because it was in a Japanese magazine and some of the other camera are more than likely I thought maybe I would pass it on.

Are any of these artists illustrations online?

I would think that Pentax will reserve the name K1 for a fullframe flagship and that a 24MP APS-C would be named K3.

I would imagine it will be K3 or something like that. Anyway, I expect higher than the above specs for coming camera. Specifically, big improvements in number of autofocus points, tracking ability. Hopefully up to the 7D level. We'll see...

No I looked online but couldn't find anything. It is the June issue of CAPA and perhaps hasn't been out long.

sorry if it's been posted or discussed before, but since you guys are talking about K1, what is this K1 prototype like below pics, anyway?

Man, if it looks like the prototype it better compete with D4 and 5DIII
That thing looks massive! Of course, it comes from a different era of digital photography.. I like all those dials and buttons, though!

That'd be disappointing to me.

an older ist'd styled digital with 2 or 3 megapixlels?

there's always prototypes and mock ups, few ever go into production, but often tell hints of where the designers are going with their research...

if Pentax did go FF would I buy one? well here is a theory..
Suppose Pentax DID releas a FF camera.... If it is in the $4000.00 plus price range... the answer is no. Too pricey for me and many others, they will sell less than the k-01, to the typical Pentax user base and will likely NOT bring masses of new users to the brand.

So what might work? IF Pentax took the styling from the Mz5n, and the same features as k30 and added a flip out lcd, dropped the mechanical IS and went with a digital IS scheme, scrapped the weather sealing and offered it at $2400.00 or less... then yes If the image quality was there, and the high iso equalled or exceeded the k-5's but with a higher resolution and better af plus video capabilities, I could see me paying that much happily... retro styling, basic features.... a good studio/wedding camera...

add weather sealing and sensor shake IS to the mix and up the price on a later model, sure why not... but entry to FF had better be a real bargain price wise or they won't help the company...

That's the Pentax MZ-D which was almost released a decade ago. That picture with the K1 text popped up a few months ago. Don't know if it is a hint, a joke or some alternate name for it.
