Don't be afraid of learning the K10D. It's not that hard. The K200 really doesn't offer anything that the K10D doesn't, all at a higher price. If you are going to get one, get them before they are gone.
You seem to be operating on the assumption that just because the K100D has scene modes all users of K100D must be using them and are incapable of shooting in Av, Tv, or manual.

Some of us manage to shoot in Av, Tv, or even manual just fine without what you have very accurate (but probably unintentionally) labeled the "extra" wheel. Just because we only have one wheel doesn't mean we can't (or don't) manage to set our shutter speeds and/or apertures just fine anyway.

14 bit thingy. And if I knew what the heck it was I might offer an opinion on it.

I'm with Nathan. The AA batteries alone make it more appealing than the K10D.

Currently K10D kit goes for less than €700 in Europe (new with 2 year warranty from reputable dealers!) and for less than $700 in USA (also new from reputable dealers).
I was referring specifically to the $485 price. The lowest I had managed to find was $550 after rebate from Abe's of Maine, but I don't exactly trust that site. Amazon has it for $580, but one hundred dollars less? I have seen a couple of people reference that price around this forum, but I've never seen it myself. Could someone point me in the right direction?

You can snag a brand new K10D body for as low as $485 after rebate.

I'll wait and see if the K200D is really a K10D shoe-horned into a smaller body.

While they do use the same sensor, Pentax might have done some tricks to improve the image processing, more so high ISO images.

The Sony A200 did just that, improved on the image processing of the A100, as well as improved on AF.

I'd also like to see if the SR on the K200D is improved, since the stated specs now go from 2.5 to 4 stops. So I guess it's not simply a matter of a choice between AAs or proprietary batteries, scene modes or more advanced modes, etc.

Now, whether that justifies the $800 asking price, though... that's the big question, especially with announcements from Canon (450D with more MPs, a marketer's dream), Nikon (D40x/D80 replacement), and Sony (A200 and the rumored camera in between A200 and A700) on the horizon or here already.

It's only getting harder to get a foothold in the entry-level sector.

well having a K100D has bean nice because i did misplace the bat charger for my K10D it is around hear some where lol

if people ask me what camera they should get if there starting out i and still going to recmend the K100D. in my opnion this is a KICK ass little camera and Pentax got a lot right with it and hands down beats the others in the same class ie the D40. now that the Pentax K200D is out the price is going to be out standing on K100D. The other camera that i tell people if they prfer a neather brand is the D70 witch i think Nikon got right.

i use my K100D as a pro as a photoj and it has stud up VERY well and i would hate for it to be over looked for beggner DSLR users.

At Beach Camera and using the coupon code of "WIN25"

List price $609 for the body only
Coupon code - $25 = $584
$100 MIR = $484

Actually not true at all. But the person I was replying to seemed to think that because the K200D had scene modes and the K10D didn't, that it was easier to use the K200D. As to the second wheel, of course you don't need it, but having had one, I don't think I'd ever not have one again, and most agree with that. It seems a far more useful feature than any scene mode. Given that overall the K200D offers nothing more than the K10D, the K10D still looks like the best bang for the buck between the two.

K10D if you can find one. Less money, more camera. Looks like the K200D is essentially a K10D stuffed into a K100D body, with the buffer crippled.

I have heard buydig and beachcamera are the same company. Does this coupon work with both sites? I want to try it out, but I haven't seen where you enter the coupon yet, I'm guessing it is after you have given your credit card information. Anybody tried this on buydig? They have the 10-17 fisheye lens for $15 cheaper than beachcamera and I want to get that as well. Maybe I will just make separate orders.

I actually did the following last week
1. Signed up at fatwallet.com
2. Used referral for shop.com ($9.14 rebate coming in 3 months)
then entered "win25" code at checkout ($25 rebate in about a month)
3. Ordered the camera through shop.com from beach camera free shipping - $609 - ($100 pentax rebate)

My final total will be $609 - $100 - $25 -$9.14=$474.86

Not a bad deal. I got my camera 2 days ago and I am thrilled!

I don't know. I saw the deal on Slickdeals back in December and they did mention anything about using it at SHOP. The WIN25 code may no longer be valid, but that was the deal they were referring to.

I bought two more batteries for my K10D for $10 each (Konica-Minolta from B&H). It will take me a while to burn through three batteries. I'm not sure about the AAs... alkalines don't work properly (high internal resistance, low capacity), so you're still talking rechargeables, right? Where is the advantage?

I should also mention the K10D's charger operates from 100-240 VAC, at 50-60 Hz, so it works in most countries. And keeping matched sets of NiMHs is also a thing of the past with the K10D.

Probably ones that don't work very well.... the K10D uses a rechargeable lithium battery.
