PENTAX-DA 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM - 900 USD...WOW....

PENTAX-D FA645 MACRO 90mmF2.8ED AW SR - 5000 USD

Oh....It's absurd to rebadge Tamron, add SDM and ask 900 USD...

SDM and $900, no thanks

Makes me glad I have an 18-250 with good old fashioned, and reliable, screw drive technology. Now, if it's really DC technology like the 18-135WR that is a completely different story.

Just looking at my 18-135 and comparing it to the above image. My 18-135 doesn't say DC anywhere on sides of the lens, only on the front. We need to see a photo of the front of this lens to really know if it is SDM or DC. I would think that with all of the bad press that SDM continues to receive, that Pentax would either re-box it as SDM II or drop it all together for the DC engine.

indeed, it's very likely according to the picture. In that case, i hope it use the piezzo motor home made from Tamron, or a new SDM, instead of the old SDM.
But the price bug me a little : it's 30% more expensive than the tammy version, and almost 40% more than the Sigma 18-250 OS HSM !

But will see.

It could be using Tamron's own motor. The Sony version has no VC. It is $649 at BH

The World's Lightest, Smallest 15x Zoom*, with Tamron's First PZD (Piezo Drive)

The acclaimed Tamron 18-270mm VC ultra zoom for APS-C format DSLRs has reached an astonishing new level of compactness, performance, and speed with the addition of PZD (Piezo Drive), an innovative ultrasonic autofocus motor based on an advanced piezoelectric design. The result is a lens that's considerably lighter, and noticeably shorter and slimmer (filter diameter: 62mm) than any previous lens in its class, and provides faster, quieter auto-focusing.
Signature features that have made this amazingly versatile lens the world standard in its class have been retained. They include a 28-419mm equivalent (15X) zoom range, an improved, lightweight, compact Vibration Compensation (VC) system, macro focusing to 0.49m (19.3 inches) throughout, and, of course, superlative imaging performance.
*For SLR camera high-zoom-ratio lenses with 15x magnification capability. Current as of December 2010. (Source: Tamron).

I agree. But if it is a rebagged Tamron that is EXCELLENT News! Tamron has not released anything recently for K mount so if Ricoh has re-established/mended that relationship that is far better news than any specific features for a single lens. Still, I hope its not SDM.

A very good point made here ... Thanks again, J

The exchange rate makes it look very expensive but don't panic. For comparison, the in-store price for the Sony, Nikon and Canon versions is 65,800 yen in Japan, so the rumoured in-store price of around 70,000 yen is a small premium over the Tamron version.

A big expensive super zoom... Whatever floats some peoples' boats I guess.

That 645D lens looks interesting. I wonder if the SR means it has internal shake reduction? The first Pentax lens to have SR considering the 645D system is fixed sensor and now we see it will stay that way...
Edit, and it is a macro, that's a beautiful piece of engineering.

I presume it does. Living open the possibility for some future 24x36 lenses (telephoto lenses, in particular) to have shake reduction as well.

Have you guys also seen the HD in the name "HD Pentax-D FA645 Macro 90mm f/2.8 ED AW SR"?

Could this point out a new generation of 645 lenses designed for highly pixelized 645 sensors?

Could this mean that the 645D II or 645Dn or whatever its name is would have more than the rumoured 50 Mpixels, knowing that some Teledyne Dalsa 645 sensors have as much as 80 Mpixels?

HD? Maybe Pentax has a 4K camera up its sleeve. I seem to remember a Japanese Pentax guy talking about 4k cameras a while back.

Yes, to Prime Aficionados that lens is the antithesis of what they love about their hobby. However, for a company struggling to build market share that lens represents two VERY important things: 1) its a rebuilding of a VERY important relationship with a 3rd party lens maker, and 2) it represents a VERY attractive lens for the consumer market.

Soccer Mom with her unprotected camera on a strap without a hood (and probably with no lens cap and a cheap UV filter) buys zooms and the longer the reach the more likely it is to sell - particularly if it is smallish. A LOT more buyers like that one then like us here on PF. So, if Pentax really wants to enlarge its presence in the consumer range of dSLRs it has to offer a wider range of cameras (K-300, K-30, K-5mkII, and K-3) and it has to offer a solid range of consumer zooms (the longer the better frankly).
