K20D vs A700 high ISO test (not 56K friendly)

Not official, but I had time to play around at the camera store and take these unprocessed images to show the ISO quality in the same scene. I'll do the same with the Canon 40D when I have a chance.

A700 ISO 800:

K20D ISO 800:

A700 ISO 1600:

K20D ISO 1600:

A700 ISO 3200:

K20D ISO 3200:

A700 ISO 6400:

K20D ISO 6400:

I would advice you to prepare yourself for the rain of exposure critics (well-funded if you ask me) that you are about to receive

Chris,

Thanks for the samples.

I'll leave out the exposure stuff and instead state that either of these cameras seem to do ISO 800 better than the k10D does ISO 400.

Cheers.

Fixed the issue by adding +0.7 EV in camera with the A700.

On to the Canon 40D

Is the word

PENTAX on the stand under the camera actually an orangy-red as shown in the K20 shots or more red as in the A700 photos?

Is this just a WB problem?

Well even though this isn't a WB test the actual colour is a little orange.

Interesting- 1600 looks really good to me and though I can't see using 6400 except in desperation, I took the liberty of trying neat image on the k20 file at 6400 (hope you don't mind) I don't know what I'm doing with it (only had the program for two days) but it doesn't look too bad

I note that both the a700 and 40d wb look a look better than the k20d, which also looks a bit oversaturated. Interesting that the two other cames got a very similar wb result with the k20d messing up. I have been mostly happy with my k10d wb tho, and there are tools to help so am not too worried.

The K20D has better noise control, but the A700 is sharper. Could be the lens (?)

The K20D image are manual WB. Noone should take conclusions on WB from thise shots !

No, it's not the lens. It's brutal in-camera sharpening. Way too much sharpening for me.

So, WB in Sony picture is much better.
Colours are also better in Sony photo, K20D's colours are oversaturated to my taste.
Way too much sharpening in a700 photo.
K20D does better job in noise control.
Both look overexposed for me. Sony pictures without 0.7EV applied were best to my taste.

Overall I like Sony picture more.

If i see it correctly, K20D high ISO noise is small blue dots, A700 noise is red and blue spots which are bigger than those in K20D.
This is in line with one A700 users recent comments about his camera in one Finnish forum...
K20D interpretation in these pictures is way more pleasing, sorry.

Thanks for posting. Frankly, the A700 shots seem more natural and clear to me... doh. The ISO is marginally better on the K20 side, but I'd be hardpressed to think I'd use more than 1600 anyways, and both are acceptable at that level. Was the expanded dynamic range turned on in the K20? I notice that in the reflection of the lights on the yellow part of the can the A700 seem to show better gradation. EDIT: found a D300 - K20D comparison posted here: D300/K20D Comparison: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Interesting observation from the pics:

The K20D noise handing seem to supress the red channel FAR more than the blue and green channel - in fact, the blue looks so pronounced I wonder if they did anything to supress it at all?

The A700 chroma noise supression seem to evenly apply to all 3 channels.

So, Pentax = heavy handed with red chroma noise and ignored the blue? What is the thinking behind such an algorithm? Is there any scientific study showing this is more pleasent to human eyes?

(P.S> The noise patten on K20D ISO6400 shot looks similar to my SonYEricsson camera phone - lots blue noise and no significant red chormo noise LOL!).

Yeah, and whats with the bar code and writing on top of the roll of thread/string being greenish & blueish for the K20D, and nicely black as expected on the A700?
