Pentax at P&E2013: FF under development, APS-C compact camera and more

PC Pop interviewed the Managing Director and General Manager of Pentax Ricoh China during the P&E 2013 trade fair (the largest photo fair in China, the 16th edition of which took place in Beijing from 19 to 22 April, 2013):

P&E2013? (in Chinese)

Google Translate for a Google translation from Chinese.

The main statements:

- MX-1 sales are good (there are only 2 weeks MX-1 is on the market in China)

- a Pentax-branded APS-C compact camera (sort of MX-1 with APS-C sensor) is planned

- (after its price reduction) K-01 sells well, supply is lower than demand

- (when asked about a Pentax mirrorless camera) R&D is focussing on pancake lenses and the optimisation of K mount (???)

- a Pentax 24x36 camera is under development and it will be "distinctive" (different from competition, I presume)

- the impact of Nikon D800 on the Pentax 645's sales is limited, their positioning is different, 645D is targeted to professionals.

OK. A while yet on the FF. But another APS-C compact? How much different could it be to the GR announced? There should be something developing in the dSLR arena.

It would be MX-1-like, hence with a zoom lens, whilst Ricoh GR has a 28mm fixed focal lens.

My Chinese Pentax dealer here in Beijing sold 5 MX-1 the first weekend they were available (end of March).
I got one of them.

Google translate is actually pretty good in this case. It got all the main points right, not bad for machines.

I'm dreaming about weather-sealed wide-angle fixed-focal lens compact camera. My best shots are mostly from the days when weather is harsh or at least rainy.

Well, it is just heartening to know that there are real plans going on behind the scenes. Recent announcements have not targeted the upper end users of the SLR system. No upper end lenses, other than the 560mm. No upper end bodies except a slight modification of the K5.

I would like to see a flagship successor to the K5 come out with some improvements in video, focus peaking, better auto focus, whatever they can throw in it. And more lenses -- faster and wider in particular...
