I may have missed something (I have to confess: I am not really following all leaks, rumors, rumored leaks, and leaked rumors ;-))) so someone please enlighten me on the new camera name: how it turned out to be K7D, not K3D or even K1D? Why "7"? Any reason for that? Anything half-official? Any piece of information I have overlooked?
I just keep thinking Minolta, not Pentax when I read K7D. (It somehow screams Minolta Maxxum 7D.)

I'm pretty sure somebody here just made it up. Turned "LX" upside down, kicked in the X and the rest is internet history!
To make it clear that it's a new line. If the K20D successor is the K30, a K3 would confuse people (meaning me).
Anyway, we can discuss again the (alleged) connection with the mountain K7. I intended to start that rumour but I really don't know if I got anywhere with it.

Heard a story that the transplanted Hoya Exec who now oversees Marketing for Pentax is an avid mountain climber, came up with the whole "outdoors" extension of the weather-sealing.
He has either climbed or wants to climb K7 (Karakoram), a mountian in the Himalyas (and plays off "The North Face" outdoor clothing).
everything is 7 at the moment. It's the next big thing in tech. Intel's top of the line cpu: intel i7. Windows newest OS: Windows 7. Pentax' coming DSLR: K-7. The big three marching lock-step.

It makes perfect sense (assuming the spec is right.)
The body is roughly in the same class as the Nikon D300, D400. That means its somewhere between Canon 40D/50D and 5D. If Canon is making a new body position between 50D and 5D, it would also call it a 7D, since 10D was taken already a few years ago.
A "7" would also leave room for the future FF model, at least psychologically.
Now that Nikon has switch its low end to DXXXX instead of DXX. Everybody but Sony is following the same short name for high end; long name for low end convention. It makes camera comparison much easier.
I swear to god Nikon has the most confusing naming system. Canon is not far behind with the Rebel and "Kiss".

First it is NOT K7D, but K-7. I repeat: K Hyphen Seven!
And 7 is the lucky number of Japanese.
Why not K7D? Just because Minolta died after markeing a M7D, which was their last model! :-0
