Expect K7 Price Drop

The Canon 7D announced today will compete directly with the K7. The Nikon D300s is in the same boat - similar feature set. So the K7 is out of the gate first, with the Nikon D300s just being shipped and pre-orders being taken for the 7D.

The APS-C is alive and well!

Nope, the D700s is around (http://www.adorama.com/alc/news/Niko...-Shoot-The-Day) - for added video capabilities.
Canikon = high budget = high throughput of cam models.

I'd be keen to see another Pentax cam development before a significant K-7 price drop.

sorry! meant d300s - big difference. The d300s is just landing in customer's hands now.

Still a $400 - $500 price difference - k7 compared to the D7 and 300ds, but I still think think this will cause downward price pressure, or I should say shorten the time for the price to go down, which at least in the short term is good for K7 buyers. Not so hot for Hoya.

I don't include the Nikon d90 since it is more of a consumer - plastic camera, but nothing wrong with it and cheap, and of course not a Pentax!

I corrected the post d700s->d300s

My point is the release of these two similar cameras will hasten the inevitable street price reductions.

Based on todays presentation I don't se any reason for a price drop in Norway either.

Current (best) prices in Norwegian online stores:

K-7 ~10000 NOK
D300 ~11000 NOK
D300S ~15000 NOK

The 7D was announced at a retail price of over 18500 NOK (body only). It might fall down to a street price of around the D300S, but at at 50% higher price I don't see how it would affect the K-7.

Sure, some might argue that the 50D now only costs 8500 NOK, but then the similar specced K20D goes for 6000 NOK as well.

The K-7 is currently riding high in the reviews and is apparently selling quite nicely for Pentax .... i don't think we will see a price drop til maybe christmas.

I don't want them to drop the price either ... its one less thing i need to be tempted to buy.

no significant price drops yet here in the US, unless you consider a $0.99 cent difference a price drop.

hopefully by christmas this year

Pentax K-7 has a higher than normal mark up over wholesale

Pentax K-7 has a higher than normal camera mark up over its wholesale at "$880" Loonies ,

so thats about $810 USA wholesale at .92c per dollar bill exchanged.

Dealers usually don't make $500 Plus on a single Dslr sale so theres plenty of room for Pentax to drop its M.A.P. in near future. MAP ???

Minimum Advertised Price

Here's the $880 K-7 Wholesale Linky:

Massive jump-ship. What to do? - FM Forums

and what you'll read there:

I shoot Pentax. I always have. I've managed to capture some great photos with my K10 since last January when I started photography. Two complaints about Pentax though: ISO/noise performance and autofocus performance; it's consistently below-par with all of their bodies. Everything else is awesome. Just superb. Better than the other brands, sometimes.

I'm very disappointed with the noise performance of the K7. And despite the $880 (employee discounted) price tag, I might not pick one up.

I might get a D700. I have zero Nikon gear and I have ~$3000 in Pentax gear.

The D700 is full framed - it has spectacular noise performance and a brilliant and reliable autofocus system. That's all I want. But $3000 for the body and many thousands more for a new lens collection.

Ugh. What should I do?

Well, thinking that way is part of why retail prices on *everything* tend to drop for the holiday season. It's actually not a bad time at all to buy camera stuff if you can set some aside.

If you have the luxury of that kind of choice and are thinking 900 bucks is too much for a spanking-new K-7, you should either figure out how to not be disappointed, or spend the thousands and complain to Nikon.

I've just gotta ask, Samsungian, being a bit piqued by some sore spots about not having that kind of money, and linked-aspersions cast upon how much I know what I'm doing because of them:

How can you* have* all that money, the means by which you got it, all these niggling complaints, generally having nothing good to say about the brand you're ostensibly a fan of...

And still find it worth your time to try bitching at Pentax, Hoya, and Samsung to be Nikon or Canon or whoever... Rather than just go buy what you want?

You've *never* got anything good to say about this stuff, without backhandedly slagging on it at the same time.

What do you *want?* And why are you here spreading 'rumors' to this effect, if it's not working for you?
