Pentax and their miserably mundane compacts; this thing is no exception, which would be why it didn't register on "the radar".

I think Pentax's notable offerings as far as compacts go, can be summed up very easily (in no particular order):

* The WP series of waterproof cameras have always been pretty good, keep it up. Maybe even re-introduce a AA powered model!

* Pentax 750z; a very fine compact, almost rangefinder camera, they need to make another one like it, perhaps in micro fourthirds format!?

* Optio S was one sexy little P&S, even by todays standards it's very small and well made, more like this?

The rest, IMO, are uninspired, boring and rebadged (Casio? Sanyo?) pieces of junk.

Actually all W-serie are nice and very capable cameras.

Yeah, my mistake. By "WP" I meant the W series as well; great all round cameras.
