Pentax K-5 (?) - new camera this year

This camera will be this year.
Lower than K-7, but in spirit of K200D.

K-5 is a name used by salesmen from swedish Pentax distributor about new camera coming in-between K-7 and K-x. No details about technology, price or launch date.
But since the distributors are getting info about it now, my guess is that the camera is undergoing the beta test procedure so hopefully not that far away.

K-7 replacement or update will be APS-C.
Pentax still needs a camera for the APS-C Limiteds and DA Stars. The new K-5 is too much low level for that.

If Pentax releases a 24x36, with the rumoured Samsung 24x36 sensor, then it will be above the K-7 and this will also come as a Samsung.

If it's in the spirit of the K200, maybe the Japanese magazine that was in another thread made a decent prediction...

my local pentax distributor said few months ago almost exactly the same - this year's camera will be squeezed between K-x and K-7.

i understand some will be disappointed, failing to see how can new camera be squeezed between ~$1000 K-7 and ~$600 K-x, but those prices are just a dream for most of europe - over here, K-7 goes for almost $2000, K-x is priced a bit above $900. so *I* can see a place for even lower-specc'd model, too!

Poland isn't sooo bad, but close. They K-7 goes for about $1500 (as of 03/03/10 excahnge rate) and the K-x goes for $690+

Ogl, please add a "I guess" , "imo" or something else together with your speculations. You have a track record of writing pipedreams in a convincing tone.

If this K-5 would see the light, the K-7 class needs to be kicked up a bit.

I think no camera between.
It's just upgrade of K-x with upper LCD, WR and AF points.

I hope it has a focus assist lamp and faster AF that could rival the canikons w/ better high iso improvements.

In UK, K-x goes for £479 body only, K-7 for £775 body only, £799 with DA 18-55 WR (and K-7 comes with a spare battery, even third party one costs around £30). The difference may be higher in other countries, but what is the problem with buying in UK.

So I really can't see any point of intermediate model, unless they will replace the K-7 roughly at the same time. Launch price of that K-5 could be actually *higher* than K-7...

edit: And, looking at what people actually want from a model above K-x, I really can't see why they don't buy K-7? It's got all that and more...

I don't know, I could see some sense in it. Quite often when people compare 3 items they'll choose the middle one as a compromise between price and quality. Right now people looking at the Pentax range just see 2 so maybe Pentax are hoping to take some sales away from K-X and divert them into this middle model.

The question is though is that an accurate reflection of how people shop. Do they compare the whole lineup from one manufacturer or do they compare 3 models with say similar features & price range. I'd have thought the latter myself unless you're a Pentax nut. I don't know how many Pentax nuts there are

In terms of the bigger picture though, it's not exactly the case that the Pentax lineup is overcrowded. 3 wouldn't exactly be oversaturating things when you compare it to what's on offer by other guys - models to suit various budgets, tastes and so on.

Anyhow it's just a guess.

Personally I think it will be a model BELOW the K-x.

Price wise the K-x is not an entry level camera and they need something that will tempt P&S shooters.
