Can I use smc Pentax-A lenses on my *ist D/*ist DS?

Yes.
All exposure modes (P, Av, Tv, M, scene modes) will work when the aperture ring is set to "A". The aperture is controlled from the camera just like on "DA" lenses.

There is one limitation on the *ist DS: The built-in flash will fire at full intensity, i.e. flash automation (P-TTL) is disabled on the *ist DS when using A lenses. There are no limitations on the *ist D. Note that A lenses are manual focus

hi , first post.

this is not correct. 'A' lenses and onboard flash work just fine. at least it does on my DS.

How is the resolution when using A lenses with the small imager? Are they noticably softer?

They should be sharper, if anything, since the corners of the lens aren't being used.
